ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Ninety minutes couldn’t separate them, nor could 20 of extra time. A penalty shoot out left it all square and then in the most dramatic of sudden death penalties Monty Butler saved from Acean St Hilaire and Avondale Williams calmly sent Leslie Ambrose the wrong way to send the Islanders into the final with a 5-4 win over the Sugar Boys in the second semi final of the Heineken Cup on Thursday May 17, 2012.

During the first 45 minutes, the Islanders missing a few key players had flattered to deceive with their normal fluent passing game sorely missing. The Sugar Boys were full of running and creativity and it was the league champions who were the much more relieved to reach half time with the game still 0-0.

Apart from a litany of missed chances, neither goal keeper was seriously threatened during the half, but Ranalie Cains for the Islanders hit the bar and the Boys’ Everton Pereira crashed an effort into the post with Butler well beaten.

The natural order of things seemed to have returned in the 59th minute though when a long range free kick from Cains deceived Leslie in goal and crashed into the net through his hands and off the cross bar.

Such is the belief though that Coach Jeffrey Demming has instilled in his players that they never gave up and continued to harry the Islanders into mistakes whilst keeping them at bay. The second goal never came and with Referee Eldon Williams holding up fingers to signal just two minutes remaining, the Boys piled forward.

The effervesant Michael Castillo and Jerio Morris urged their team forward and it was fitting that a ball from Jerio, who put in a man of the match performance as Captain, caused mayhem and confusion in the Islander box. As Jamal Sergeant and Butler looked at each other to clear Castillo nipped in and fired home a well deserved equalizer.

In extra time, the momentum was definitely with the Boys and with the first period seeing no changes to the score line, it was the team from VG that deservedly went ahead through a Derrol Redhead header that gave Butler no chance.

Within 60 seconds, though the Islanders leveled it at 2-2 with Rhan Lennon outpacing the last line of defense to fire home.

With the hit and miss of a penalty shoot out looming the game switched from end to end as both teams looked for the decisive goal and with the clock running down, the Sugar Boys shouting for a penalty for hand ball Fitzroy Daley raced down the right wing only to see his cross come shot cannon of the cross bar. Shortly after the shrill note of the whistle brought the game to an end and gave the players and the crowd a chance of a breather.

McGraw Baptiste and Dwayne Ross both scored. Redhead scored and Cains missed to make it 2-1. Morris and Amon Boscombe made it 3-2. Castillo and Daley made it 4-3. Terry Baptiste missed and then Lennon scored to keep the Islanders alive at 4-4.

St Hillaire hit his penalty straight and far too close to Butler who made the save and Williams scored to send the Islanders through by the skin of their teeth.

In the final, they will meet One Love who overcame a tenacious, but weary Wolues team 3-0.

The first half finished goalless as the Wolues, who had the far tougher run in to the semi finals, playing 3 games in just over a week, matched One Love run for run, shot for shot and man for man.

In the second half though, One Love stepped on the gas, went more direct and the Wolues had nothing left to give.

Collin Green helped himself to a hat trick with three cool finishes. The first a well struck half volley, the second a poachers effort as the ball bounced free off the goalkeepers chest and invitingly at Greens feet just six yards out.

The third a sublime one on one finish as he bore down on goal and applied a deft touch to send the ball rolling over the line just ahead of a despairing lunge from Alex Jarvis.
