Wheatley warns of growing prison population
Speaking on the Speak Out BVI programme on May 13, 2014 he pointed to the prison population of St Kitts which was said to be a total of 611 inmates and considered to be four times the world average when taking the population into consideration.
“I remember when our prison population was just three, and we knew who they were and they would be in and out from time to time. Now we have over a hundred and the number is climbing,” Wheatley stated.
He added, “We ought not to wait until other countries do something about that, we ought to do something about it.”
He recommended that there should be an alternative to imprisoning persons for minor offences and contended that this interfered with the future of the persons who were imprisoned as they would now have a criminal record and this would affect their chances of getting a job.
“I think we must find ways of overcoming that difficulty,” Wheatley said.
According to Wheatley, while the prison population might seem small at the moment with just over a hundred, “maybe in two years from now it will be two hundred or three hundred.”
The commentator further pointed out that following the launch of the war on drugs in the United States in 1986, the prison population went up by over five hundred percent. “That is why the United States still has about the largest prison population,” he said. “I think we ought to be looking into that as well.”
