ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talk show host and social commentator Donald E. de Castro said affordable housing is not just about being able to get land and build a home but also to be able to rent a decent apartment at a reasonable price for persons not planning to build.

He was speaking last night February 11, 2015 during his radio talk show Straight Talk on ZBVI 780 AM heard from 8:00 PM.

“Every time the last government or this present government talks about affordable housing they talk about home ownership and first time home owners, and I have no problem with that,” he said. “I love to see that people could build a home that they could afford and maintain for them and their families,” de Castro said.

But he pointed to the other end of the spectrum where persons might not be able to build homes but who will need affordable housing nonetheless.

"Take family ‘A’ that has four children and only two of them are financially able to build homes. What about the other two? Are they not entitled to somewhere decent to live also like an affordable apartment like they have in other parts of the world?" he asked.

He said there is never any talk about that because many in the government and in the territory are financially comfortable and thus may not see the importance of affordable apartment rental.

"We must look at what we could do to benefit everyone...minimum wage people, middle income people and the top one percent," he said.

"This is not supposed to be a one-sided community. We need to be able to accommodate everyone," he said.

de Castro said everyone is entitled to make a decent living and to have an affordable place to live and to have something decent to eat but in many cases in the territory this is not happening.

While affordable housing is needed, low income housing does not work!

Plenty of empty apartments belonging to local landlords who want high rents to cover mortgage payments and profit. Do you expect Govt to pay the high rents, and then rent out at a lower rate?

what is needed is price standards that make rents fair, landlords should not be able to charge an arm and a leg for their place

I like this article and I hope the right people are reading it!

Housing doesn't have to be like the "projects". I have seen proper housing areas in other places. The area is clean and the apartments are very decent- why does everyone always have to be so negative instead of providing suggestions to make things better??

Rent is ridiculous on this Island- in order for some to live in a non-wooded shack, their only option is to surrender their privacy and live with countless of roommates..

I have plans to build apartments in the near future and I plan to build decent apartments with decent space, and NO, they will not be rented in order that I make a ridiculous profit- I do work and plan to continue working until my apartments are paid off- until then I will live humble! For Government to step in and provide some type of housing for families of low income individuals- well that would be wonderful.
