East End, Anegada, VI – Information coming into Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) is that a large number of whales trapped on a reef at the Eastern End of Anegada have reportedly died, with several others injured.

The incident reportedly started two days ago, however, more whales have since died with that figure exceeding 40 as of today July 2, 2022.

Marine Biologist, Dr Shannon Gore indicated that what likely happened was that an injured or sick whale came to shore and was crying out for help which caused more whales to come to the rescue.

Whales unable to navigate shallow water - Dr Gore

She added that the Whales do not know to navigate the area and shallow waters like Dolphins, and this is resulting in more whales getting injured and trapped.

Dr Gore advised that any further sighting of whales, persons should not attempt to get the giants back in the open as it can cause them more harm than getting them to safety as sharks are now in the water, waiting to attack.

One social media user reported that some 46 whales had died as of 3:00pm this afternoon, Saturday.

Our news center will bring more details as they become available.

One thing is clear. We are not prepared for these situations here and this has been handled poorly.

Why is it that the news bloggers continue their disrespect on the Premier of this country and the news media would print such ugly and disgusting things. Newspapers please be mindful of what you print. Most times it makes no sense and it has absolutely nothing to do with the subject matter.

here is what I am sending out to Anegada - "Please forward this to any Anegada chats - I am well aware of the mass stranding of pilot whales now occurring in Anegada and have already contacted the Puerto Rican Stranding Network. They have advised to get as many samples from each of the dead/stranded whales as possible to figure out where this population is from and any clues what could have caused this – most likely disease or parasites. As this species is usually in open ocean, they are not used to swimming in surf/over reefs and will get injured trying to come into shallow waters. When one whale is sick, it often calls to others for help and results in so many other whales trying to help the one sickly whale. As this probably started a few days ago, various species of sharks will already be circling the area. Trying to save these mammals without trained specialists in handling and administering the veterinarian care needed to keep it alive is like putting an injured person back into their car after a car accident and getting them to drive away. For those that are in Anegada, please do not try to dispose of the animals yet until I can get up there on Monday to at least get tissue & teeth samples. Many thanks" . if you can send out as well - a lot of people are going up to try to save them but Tony said this would have started a few days ago with sharks already circling the area. Trying to pull a whale to open ocen could result in a shark attack.

A tragedy! I hope that marine scientists are brought into the Territory to investigate what caused this to happen.

This happened before on Anegada over 15+ years ago, where there were over 150 whales beached themselves. Please speak to the older folks they will tell you!!

These animals have more sense of direction than people. Anyway.

Pay attention to the fact that these animals are speaking to each other we’re simply too ignorant and full of ourselves to think we’re the only species capable of intelligent communication. Meanwhile the animals are constantly making noises.

Need to get some backhoes and bury them as soon as possible. Don't bury them at sea because that will increase more sharks in the area.

First comment that makes sense. They are called pilot whales because the pod follows a pilot. So, if the pilot in trouble that’s it. I think it’s the Faroe Islands where they have an annual pilot whale hunt. Blood for days. Technically, they are high functioning dolphins. Sad either way.
