BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI-  “We've betrayed the trust of the people and the voters with our actions over the years. We've been held accountable for that.” This statement was made by the newly appointed Leader of His Majesty’s Loyal Opposition and Chairman of the National Democratic Party (NDP), Honourable Marlon A. Penn (R8), during an appearance on Talking Points on Monday, May 4, 2026.

He acknowledged that the recent elections have shown that the public is dissatisfied with the party's past actions and behaviour.

Members put differences aside

Honourable Penn revealed that the party's members recently met, set aside their differences, and held honest discussions to determine a path forward for the organisation. “We came in the room, all of us put our differences aside and had frank and open conversation, discussions about what happened, where we are, where we need to go, and  we decided to move forward, and this is where we are," he stated.

Penn confident in his leadership

When asked if he believes he can regain the trust of the people before the upcoming elections, Hon Penn expressed confidence in his leadership. “I have proven with my leadership that I'm consistent, I’m loyal and  dedicated to the cause of this country, our organisation, and the people of the Virgin Islands.”

He further explained that the party has begun engaging with the public early on to address any concerns they may have, both regarding the party and broader issues affecting the country. “We're going to consider the level of engagement all the way to national elections.”

He reaffirmed, stating, “I’m confident that we can do that.”

During the most recent general elections, held on April 24, 2023, the National Democratic Party (NDP) secured 3 seats in the House of Assembly. Meanwhile, in the 2019 Election, the NDP was voted out of office, winning only 3 seats. The party leader at the time, Hon Myron V. Walwyn (R6), lost his seat.

Boss its better you give up that chairman seat to Myron Mark or Rhonnie and be the deputy. Because the country will not vote for you to be premier. You are putting the rest NDP's seat at risk.

He can be Premier, once Ronnie is deputy and finance minister I can vote for that...Imagine he is Premier and Mitch is deputy, I cannot and will not vote for that, they need to come to the people with their cabinet make up if they should win...That will help the people decide how to vote...

The people do not elect the premier. The winning party chooses its premier.

DeCastro got the most votes and Fahie became Premier. She fell in lock step with the others. That said nothing to anyone because that's the pattern that's been followed for donkey years. That's why so much of all this trash talking is so much foolishness and it's why the voting populace now are in a head space where they no longer see the relevance or importance of them voting because we didn't vote for what we got the last time either. It feels like our brains are coated in the white dust that is covering everything even when you close all your windows. What we got was what the egos in the room demanded. Everybody except Lorna got a call and they all said yes we'll cross the floor if I am Premier. Lorna was a last pick because she didn't insist on the Premier's post. Then she got kicked to the curb in favor of someone whose sole ambition is to BE Premier, so now he's one step closer to the goal line. Then they found out where they were without Lorna in some of her posts and so they picked her up again. So this entire mess has less to do with "the people" and more to do with the personal ego driven ambitions of a few guys.

Too much sand is the problem. So who choses the winning party? If persons do not like the party composition and decides to NOT to vote for them, they are essentially REJECTING the premier post holder should they win. Further, they will be rejecting the entire slate of candidates on the ticket.

Actually, our district does not know you anymore. You haven't gone around your district to talk to the people, so we can air our concerns for the neighborhood that you represent. I cannot vote for someone I don't see, not even during election time. There are some neighborhoods you don't visit at all. We feel helpless and neglected. You don't even address the well-known ongoing problems that have been made public. We have been abandoned. You are supposed to know every part of your district, because we voted for you in the past.

In his interview he said that his office is open every day and his secretary is there and has been told to make sure he talks with everyone who wants to talk to him. Those folks are wearing expensive shoes, they don't walk around our dusty, pot hole filled streets to see us. I haven't seen the rep from my district since 2016. After the hurricane it seems he was more shell shocked than me and didn't even know me to say hello. Get it together. They don't have to come to your house to seek you out anymore. Send the secretary an email, you might get an answer.

@ WALK ABOUT? They need to take off those shiny shoes and wear some construction boots to get into the real nitty-gritty of their community. Why are we voting for someone who doesn't know or care to know us? This island isn't this big. Each representative should hold a community meeting to get to know their residents. All they want us to do is vote, vote, vote. We don't even know them, and we should not have to go to their office. Most of us are seniors and need to meet in a large enough location so the entire community can have its say at one meeting. Let his secretary come and take notes and phone numbers, and get back to us with the real issues we face.

You are so correct, the party has indeed lost the trust of the people but do not get it twisted, we do not trust you or your deputy to lead us. I can say this, the current leadership has faults but I'll take my chance with them.

Under you, the district you represent has very little improvement due to the fact thst you give money intended for them to another to improve his. ( Pier Park) .

In my view, a vote for this party is a vote for a Natonal Disaster Plan.

I want to know after 2-3 yrs of water fashioning when will we get water consistently, daily? What can be done to give small salary workers more money in their pockets, since the minimum wage was down to minimum and no increase in tax exemption, yet goods and services kept going up..Look at Gas Price now, some places above six $ at the pump, cooking 100 tank above 100. ,More water, more money for the people, anyone, or party that has a realistic plan, will get my votes. As it is VIP has failed. .I honestly believed in Ronnie. I think in my Heart base on his record that he is the man for this country,

So why should we trust the NDP? They %$# up the country for their own personal gain $7m for a plane scam, took the increment of public officers, gave themselves private investment capital. The NDP simply cannot be trusted with our moneys again. And the one that crossover and took our $10m and put in a scammer bank and took it out in so called loan. We can't trust them either ALL 13 MUST GO.

    Without Judgment
BVI Mamas Deserve Peace: Holding Dem Down
    By Tafari Zharr

"It’s so nice to see you smiling, baby," sings Jon Lucien in his soulful anthem "Haven’t I Told You." This sentiment captures the essence of motherhood in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), reflecting the warmth and nurturing spirit that mamas embody.

Historically, the BVI was a place where women served as peacemakers—submissive but not subservient, soft-spoken yet influential. They became custodians of BVI culture, playing a vital role in shaping family structures and preserving traditions. Their strength is expressed through arts, rituals, and communal gatherings.

From East to West, South to North, Salt, North Sound to Bitter End, Brewers and Bellevue, these women have woven a rich narrative of heritage. As we navigate modern challenges, it is time to honor their legacy and drop the hostility for Humptoms and Purcell, too!

The BVI, with its natural beauty and vibrant communities, owes much to mothers. They are not just caregivers; they are the heartbeat of their families, passing down values that shape island life. As the BVI undergoes significant change, we must recognize that these mamas desire and deserve peace—for their well-being and the preservation of the islands’ unique identity.

Mothers are pillars of BVI communities, carrying responsibilities that encompass nurturing, educating, and guiding the next generation. Their influence extends beyond the home into the broader social fabric, building strong communities. The cultural heritage of the BVI is intricately woven into their lives, ensuring traditions are celebrated, providing families with a sense of belonging.

However, the BVI faces challenges from rapid tourism development and environmental changes. These transformations create anxiety for mothers witnessing shifts in their landscapes and communities. The pressures of economic development, coupled with the desire to maintain cultural integrity, make it difficult for mothers to find peace. These challenges affect their mental and emotional well-being and reverberate throughout their families and communities.

Mamas in the BVI seek peace—a state of stability that allows them to nurture their families and preserve their cultural legacies. Achieving this peace requires safe environments, access to resources, and ensuring that their children inherit a thriving community steeped in tradition.

Facilitating this peace improves mental health and family cohesion, strengthening the community as a whole. Encouraging community engagement is vital. Involving mothers in discussions that affect their lives ensures their voices are respected. Initiatives aimed at empowering mothers through education and support can spark collective action, addressing cultural preservation alongside sustainable development.

Mamas in the BVI play an instrumental role in shaping their communities' futures. As they navigate the challenges of a changing environment, it is crucial to support their desires and initiatives. By creating an environment that values mothers’ contributions, the BVI can thrive, honoring their legacy and safeguarding the islands’ culture for generations.

I miss my mother and the mothers I’ve known through stories. I invite you to remember her and all the incredible women who have shaped our lives.

Holding dem down! On this special day, let us celebrate and appreciate the extraordinary mothers who nurture, uplift, and enrich our existence. Happy Mother’s Day! A special shout-out to Queen Esmie Stoutt (Muddie), to whom this piece is dedicated.

What has Myron managed successfully that Mark or Ronnie should be his deputy? What can he teach them? How will he lead them? We all like who we like, but when applying for a job, people look at your resume and theirs are better than his. We really have to start thinking country. This is foolishness now.

What’s happening with the roads in Greenland? Are they not within the 8th District and the broader territory? This area does not just look neglected; it is indeed neglected and taken for granted. Our votes matter, and we will speak at the polls.

The derelict vehicles all over the Tortola, with concentrations in the East End area, is deplorable. Who is not doing their job of legislating and ensuring enforcement of the laws to keep our territory safe and beautiful? It seems like we cater only to tourists districts while neglecting the communities where the hardworking voters and taxpayers live.

And there is an auto dump in Josiah's Bay right before the beach. What a horrible sight to see while traveling to the beach. They say it is an auto repair, but I don't see any repairs going on. Only dumping on the road, too, and across the road. How did this happen and why is it allowed??? Come on, where is our Representative???

From a criminal justice professional perspective and position, I can reason that recovering from a betrayal of political trust is a long-term process that requires moving beyond simple apologies to consistent, demonstrative action, accountability, and transparency. Rebuilding trust involves acknowledging the pain caused, owning mistakes without excuses, and changing behavior to prevent future lapses. This is a long-haul mission with a limited time span.
Non-Apologies with conditional language like I am sorry if you were offended or passive voices like mistakes were made will not cut it. You will have to own the action Sir. A sincere apology must admit wrongdoing, moral or otherwise and express deep regret while taking full responsibility. You will have to accept the consequences; you can resign, accept sanctions from your constituents and show that you are serious about taking responsibility. You will also need to focus your apology on the harm caused to the public and constituents rather than on your own reputation. You might have to require radical transparency and actions. Establish and implement new ethical standards such as an independent advisor who can investigate, rather than relying on internal political appointments. Be transparent…open your actions to scrutiny by proactively publishing records of meetings, lobbying or financial interests to combat the perception of selling influence. Create some concrete changes like showing tangible, not just rhetorical change, this may require new accountability mechanisms. You will need consistent long-term behaviour. Trust is built through small, consistent actions over time and not one large event. Ensure that your current actions align strictly with your stated values. Reconnect directly with your local constituency to rebuild familiarity, which is closely linked to favorability. Be patient in doing this because there is time restraint to deal with here. Rebuilding broken trust is a slow, laborious process, as political betrayal leaves deep wounds. Move beyond traditional public relations to a culture where accountability is the norm, that’s radical transparency adoption. Go ahead and advocate for stricter regulation of political advertising to combat misfortune. Your integrity should never be up for sale or negotiations to be compromised. Good luck.
