‘We’ll make early childhood education a priority’ – Dr Karl Dawson
“I am blessed and proud to stand here before you tonight and offer myself as a territorial candidate in the upcoming general elections with the party of the people, the Virgin Islands Party,” he said, adding that the team will usher in change in the Virgin Islands.
He said the country is at a critical juncture and if the people do not make the right decision about leadership that they can trust it will be very difficult for the territory to recover.
Dr Dawson said that over the years persons have been encouraging him to step forward into the political arena and after prayerful consultation with his family he decided it was the right time.
“Answering the call is well within my commitment as a Christian and as a preacher because it is a high calling to service and a calling that should be answered to the highest standards – God’s standards,” he said.
He said he is proud to be a product of the Virgin Islands public education system and said that he went on to earn degrees at the University of the West Indies and the University of Florida.
I must give back
“Because of the public support I have received for my education I feel that I must give back to the community. My desire to serve others has led me to join the Virgin Islands Party,” he said.
“When I consider the efforts of the party and those who led it over the years I am convinced that they were driven first and foremost by a desire to serve the people. I pledge that I will work with Chairman Fraser and the entire team to ensure that we do not lose sight of the base of the party – country and people first,” said Dr Dawson.
Noting that he has proudly served at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College for the past 23 years, he has played a role in the development of the college in various roles.
He also spoke of the question of whether he is leaving the college or not. “The question of my leaving has come up, and if I do my leaving may come at a personal sacrifice. But I am following a rich tradition or persons who have put what is needed for the greater good over their own self-interest and their own security,” he said.
VIP has rich legacy ineducation
The respected educator said the territory needs competent leaders at the highest level who can be trusted. “With my background in education I am going to work with other members of the party to add to the party’s rich legacy in education,” said Dr Dawson.
He said the VIP has been at the forefront of landmark educational initiatives aimed at empowering the people. “The next Virgin Islands Party Government will make early childhood education a priority,” he said, calling it a key national issue and for the good of the territory it must be accessible to all young children. “Each young child must have the chance to succeed, not just the children of those who can afford it,” he said.
Dr Dawson stated that the administration will work with private providers and public resources to ensure standard curriculum and staff to develop them.
He noted that while investment in early childhood education may not yield visible fruit by the time the next election cycle comes around, it is the type of investment that has great implications for the future and one which the Virgin Islands Party is not afraid to make. He said too that addressing early childhood education will also help with unemployment and underemployment of youths.
“I pledge to do my part in helping the Virgin Islands Party to live up to your expectations,” said Dr Dawson.

You are certainly a breath of fresh air, and give new life to the party. You are an honest man, a man with Integrity, a committed man, and certainly a man who "holds country above yourself". These are rather rare qualities in today's
politics.
God is on your side. God is on our side and God is on the people's side.
To God be the glory for the great things he is doing. Don't you worry Sir, for the battle is the Lords.
for a better future
