ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The wearing of a mask in this COVID-19 era will be more than a ‘new regular’ in the Virgin Islands- it will be required by law.

This is according to Premier and Minister of Finance, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1), speaking after the simulation exercise for the proposed re-routing of traffic in Road Town, Tortola, today, Friday, May 1, 2020.

According to the Premier, the COVID-19 pandemic presents a trying time for the Territory and “we have to understand there are certain things that have to be done in order for our economy, in order for our traffic to flow.”

He said some of those areas involve doing new things, “new things with the social distancing that will allows us to be able to live with COVID-19 until a vaccine is found, the six feet distancing, the wearing of a mask, which will become law very soon, the washing of the hands.

“But also we have to continue the running of the country.”

Latest samples sent to CARPHA return negative

Meanwhile, Premier Fahie disclosed that the latest samples sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) for testing for the Novel Coronavirus have all returned negative.

“First of all I want to say it is good news today that the Minister of Health has stated clearly that the last nine tests that went off to CARPHA for testing for COVID-19 has come back negative,” Hon Fahie said in his opening remarks.

He said 129 tests have now been done in the Virgin Islands.

Health Minister Hon Carvin Malone (AL) has previously said testing for the virus that causes COVID-19 will be “ramped up significantly.”

“It is through extensive testing that we will be able to detect and contain any remaining cases of COVID-19, thereby minimising the risk of transmission in the Territory,” Hon Malone said on April 29, 2020.

The Virgin Islands has had 6 confirmed cases of COVID-19, with 3 full recoveries and 1 death.

The mask is not to stop you from getting COV19, rather it is to stop you from infection the other person.
    • Fran (01/05/2020, 18:42) Like (12) Dislike (7) Reply
@ Bane, nonsense. The thin blue masks the pharmacies and hospital works are wearing don't have filters. They are tissue thin. At least the home made ones are thicker, giving better protection. It made my own 2 layers thick, so they are better than the blue ones. Be fair, everyone is trying to keep us safe, and if they make a little money doing it, so be it.

A surgical mask is correctly worn only one way.

The blue side is liquid repellant to keep fluids from leaking through into your nasal cavity. It is worn on the outside. If it’s a standard 3 ply mask both outer and inner layers do not filter any bacteria.

The filtration is done by the center layer.* The white side is designed to absorb exhaled fluids that would otherwise collect on the mask and decrease its effectiveness and to increase comfort. Infection control is designed to protect the patient and the wearer.

Additionally, there are different kinds of masks: tie on masks where the wearer ties the bottom tie first with the mask positioned under the chin and brought up over the nose and tied behind the head, the duckbill which is tied the same way but comes to a "bill" avoiding direct contact with the mask, cone masks which are pre-pressed filtration cones with a liquid resistant layer on the outside, and the high-filtration mask worn around patients who might have pulmonary TB or some other micro-microbial airborne spores. There are also specially designed masks for people with beards and hoods that are part of a high-level particulate filtration system like a hazmat suit.

All masks include instructions and clinical educators train healthcare practioners on the correct use of those masks used in their clinical area.

Former clinical educator, Associate Director of Nursing and contributor to JCAHO and AORN standards.

It is not about the filters, it is about keeping your mouth and nose covered. I made a few mask with different designs to coordinate with what I wear. Wearing a mask is the new fashion statement. I see many people wearing some nice mask.

Lol really!, so your telling me wearing a mask is more important than strengthening your immune system? Wearing a mask is a short term solution, if your infected and wear a mask u can still spread this disease, lol especially to those with bandanas, what they need to be doing is encouraging better diets, meals and promote healthy eating, 1% percent of the population is currently infected! Why the panic? Is there something else more to this? I’m seeing way more homemade useless masks than anything else, I hope the government planning on providing 30,000 plus masks that actually work, otherwise this is waste of time....

Great job to the Premier and his Team. I may have said that a dozen times. The announcement of the approval of Cuban Doctors/Nurses who are scheduled to arrive in the territory and the purchased of other medical supplies which includes testing kits for CODVID 19 is no doubt a proactive move by the Government in the fight against this dangerous virus. As we know, there are six (6) known cases in the territory with one unfortunate death. Three (3) persons have recovered, and there are two(2) active cases I strongly agree with the wearing of a mask by all in public places. However, I am asking for my own sanity, Is this a sign of something more serious to come, something that is known and has not yet been revealed to us? It is really a frightening thought but I must believe the Premier and Team when they promised transparency in the matter.

I am seeing a lot of dirty falling apart masks and PLEASE STOP HANGING them on your neck and head. The same germs are being carried right back to your nose and mouth.

It is POINTLESS to wear a germ-filled masked each day.

Good suggestion health wise, but you also have to be more specific about what type of mask to be worn and take note that criminals will take advantage of this, Robbery will be on a high, make it mandatory NO HOODIES, NO BANDADA around face to be allowed period, persons head suppose to be visible, NO SUNGLASSES , NO HATS when entering businesses, there is no law for business owners to protect themselves from criminals and criminals will take advantage of this, look into the please Mr Premier, You have to protect the business owners as we can’t protect ourselves with no law on our side

Mf. Premier please assess this very carefully. What about the robbers who are going to capitalise on this wearing of masks. You can't even recognise your own family in mask nowadays. Wouldn't the thieves and robbers us this law to their advantage? people be careful what you ask for...

Honourable Premier please do your research instead of going that route. You don't want to be the cause of causing a sick nation by making it law to force this initiative on the very people who put you in office. Please be seen to be an understanding leader.....
    Take a read of this....
    Be careful
Prolonged use of the mask produces hypoxia.

Breathing over and over exhaled air turns into carbon dioxide, which is why we feel dizzy.

This intoxicates the user and much more when he must move, carry out displacement actions.

It causes discomfort, loss of reflexes and conscious thought.

    It generates great fatigue.

In addition, oxygen deficiency causes glucose breakdown and endangered lactic acid rise.

Some people drive their car with the mask on, that is very dangerous, because, the stale air can make the driver lose consciousness.

It is recommended to use it only if you have someone in front or very close, and it is important to remember to lift it every 10 minutes to continue feeling healthy.

It is counterproductive for people who serve the public for 8 hours, as they are intoxicating themselves without knowing it.

    All lives are important.! "
That prevention does not lead you to another problem ... let's use the mask knowingly.

      Dr. Dennis Castro,
Thank you for sharing that knowledge! I personally was aware of the hypoxia ( lack of sufficient oxygen in the body's tissues) effects on ppl wearing masks for prolonged time. There are already plenty of such cases, in the US, when ppl fainted on the street or behind the steering wheel in their car. Wearing masks outdoors makes no sense. Maskes are to be used when interpersonal distance can not be maintained.
I wonder who advises this government. Decisions based almost exclusively on fear and pure speculations. There will be so many short, medium and long-term negative effects, woldwide, of the decisions made these past weeks. Those effects will, by far surpass the deaths (artificially inflated numbers) associated with coronavirus.
The "new regular" will not be only wearing masks (the least serious anyway) but perpetual fear, censorship and authoritarianism.

Good exercise, but a law? That's a bit extreme. Speaking of extreme. Anybody else noticing the price gouging? Some of these stores are definitely taking advantage of the situation. I've bought the same products at the same stores a long time now. They are clearly inflated now. Sad. Stop taking advantage of us!

Where the good Doctor made some very valid points about oxygen deprivation above, I'm concerned about another isuue. It's an absolute shame to cover these beautiful ladies faces. I feel like I'm back in Saudi Arabia. Mr. Premier, I plead with you not to make it a law.

I do not support wearing masks a law. The major con is oxygen deprivation, I often feel as though I'm going to pass out. Let's be rational and reasonable Premier.

I’m away and there’s no where else in the world making it mandatory to wear a mask. While it is advised, it should not enforced. the wearing of a mask consistently has its negative effects. Once again, the BVI is il-informed. We have got to start thinking for ourselves as oppose to listening to others. Leaders need to do proper research please
