BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI– Despite a significant investment of approximately 16 million dollars into the education system of the Virgin Islands, the Minister for Education, Youth Affairs, and Sports, Honourable Sharie B. de Castro (AL), has indicated there may be a need to request additional funding from the government.

The minister stated, “I guarantee you that by the end of the year, we will fight for some additional funding because we have several initiatives lined up that are just waiting for financial support to move forward.”

She made these remarks during the "Talking Points" programme on Monday, June 25, 2025, on ZBVI 780 AM.

Hon de Castro explained that considerable strategising was required to make such a significant investment, aiming to build capacity within the education system.

“I am very ambitious, and I have a great team,” she added.

The minister noted that much planning took place in the early stages, and now the benefits of that planning are becoming evident. “If you give me funding, I already know how I’m going to spend it. That’s how serious it is.”

Funding coming through advocacy- Hon de Castro

During this year's Professional Day, the minister highlighted the investment allocated for 2025, stating, "This year, 2025, the vault of education has seen the largest deposit ever."

The budget increased from $56 million last year to $67 million this year, marking an $11 million increase—a 20% rise and the largest single investment in education in one year.

She added, "I want you to know that the advocacy from me, the CEO, and the PS has been in response to your call for support."

Furthermore, she noted, "If you look at it realistically, over the last 15 years, in 10 of those 15 years, the average spending on education was $50.5 million."

Yes, more funding is needed because the school needs a lot of work to be done. The whole barrier of the school still not fixed and have children sneaking into the school, plus it needs to be paved where students, parents and teachers can walk around the school. The school also needs to have an activity where students can have free access to learn more on education system also of how to excel when they go out on job training. Parents who have drop out of school how do they teach their child or children when they are not educated. So much more needs to be done but it's just time and money.
