FISH BAY, Tortola, VI – Former Deputy Premier Dr Kerick D. Pickering says the Virgin Islands (VI), in its current state with the United Kingdom (UK) Government and implementation of Commission of Inquiry (CoI) reforms, is still in need of the British to get through its challenges.

Dr Pickering, during a December 7, 2022, interview with JTV’s the Big story with host Cathy O. Richards, said while he will ‘fight to this last’ to ensure the local constitution is never suspended, he is of the belief that the partnership with the UK and VI is still an important one.

Right persons must be elected- Dr Pickering

“I have no doubts that if we elect persons in the upcoming election who have the necessary expertise, the necessary experience, and intestinal fortitude to do what is necessary, we can sit with the British Government and have a mature discussion about everything.”

He said that way the VI will know which way the deck is stacked and negotiations can take place.

“We need the British Government to help us through this, what we don't want is them hanging a guillotine around our neck and trying to beat us over our head, that's what we don't want.

“We want to have a mature conversation around the table, but we also have to ensure that those persons from our end who are having those discussions are the right people,” he added.

Dr Pickering said that he sees those right people being put in place after the general election, if the VI people listen to what people are saying when they're campaigning to ensure the 'best of the best' is elected.

Experience needed to navigate challenges- Dr Pickering

The former legislator said the magnitude of the problems facing the VI requires experience, and persons who have the ability and the knowledge to handle difficult issues need to be a part of the solution.

Dr Pickering plans to run as an At-Large candidate in the 2023 general election.

The former Seventh District Representative announced his candidacy on September 22, 2022, during a public meeting at the Stickit in Long Look.

Dr. Pickering may have done some things wrong but he is still a good option to rep the territory locally and internationally. There has never been a politician on earth that has never went in office and done everything right.

      A. tell our people about that aeroplane: this was a good idea brought forth, but the persons we put in place to get the work done is who dropped the ball. Just like many of our government offices here.

Hon. Kye and the rest of the govt is talking about winnning American back. if you read the news AMerican already said they were making progress in gaining a presence back in the caribbean. It was landing in Dominica and Anguilla and many others. So our turn is to come, so that is not something the govt did. it was initiated by American.

Still none invested in our local airline VI Airlink.

      B. the wall)paid in full(still not done: May have some issues, but many persons ate, but let the judge have the final say.

      C. the 8 million for east end sewage project: Many government projects known and unknown to public have diverted funds. The Pier Park was chastised by us all but it is being used heavily by many organizations to host functions including the government. It was not all lost. our issue is when it comes to government projects they always overrun.

      D. the pier park] 40 million overrun: see above, in addition I will say yes there are some questions but if audits and investigations are done it would say if any illegal transactions took place. All in all the park is being used by us all.

NDP did there share and VIP past and present did there share. This time was the most upsetting as our former premier was arrested. Someone we all believed in. Upcoming election is not about NDP or VIP or PVIM, it is about our territory and electing the right leaders to represent us and take us out of the slum we are in.

Do not be a one sided political activists. Read everything, remember everything.

There is no partnership with the U.K. What is he talking about? The U.K. is in charge and can do what they want without our permission. Mr. Pickering, if you had put this much energy over 20 years ago and joined forces with our other representatives, we might have had our independence by now. But no, instead all of you were for yourselves, money and whatever you all thought was pleasurable to you all at the time. Your age group are the ones who put the guillotine rope around our necks and we the people couldn't do a thing about it with all of your attitudes stating "EITHER WE ARE WITH YOU, OR WE ARE AGAINST YOU". An entire new generation has grown up and become adults now. My grandchildren who were small 20 years ago are now grown-ups. With all of the political in-house fighting, 20 years have been WASTED. Now you are old and found the energy to come out fighting. REALLY? I am so disappointed with all of you.

One of the impossible thing for humamsto do is trying to walk much less run in a narrow straight line looking backward. Understand this my people, the past is forever gone. If we are still carrying the load of the past, we will never get to experience a pleasant present much less a bright future.

True, all of the past political leaders that we have voted for have messed up one and more way willingly., Willfully or ignorantly. Not only they, all of us have done the same in similar areas.
What Dr. Kedrick Pickering said make sense. Whether we like it or not we red to muster the political will and see negociation with the UK. If we have already concluded that we will not negotiate with the UK, then the UK will do things as it sees fit.

Please, let us be open to negotiation with the UK.
Whether we like it or not, the UK is the political head of the BVI. Let us use our brain. In a war, the stronger always win over the weaker. The UK is sronger. True we don't want them to beat us down, but in a war, the weaker gets beatdown by the greater power.

Many think that Dr. Kedrick is flip flopping on this topic issue. No. He isn't. He has come to realization that a negotiation partnership with the UK is the better way forward for the people of the British Virgin Islands.
We need a better team going forward. It is factual.
Forget about friends, family, such hindrance.
Coming next general election, vote wisely for the good of all our citizens, and visitor, too. Our future will be no brighter than the wisdom of our practical action.

The UK is not our ally. All of these COI recommendations could have been enshrined in our constitution if the UK wanted. From the beginning, the UK never intended to aid us in our trek for self-determination. What we need is the maturity of thought, uncorrupt leaders, and VI patriotism to keep us on a righteous path to self-determination. The UK can't give us what we need to be self-determined we have to have the fortitude to lay out and set out our course of action and proceed.

Some people will kill or encourage others to kill a person that they don't love for evil committed actions, but the same people will kiss their friends for the same action committed. Some people can clearly see false in others, but when it shows itself in them, their family, and crooked friends, they pretend that their blindness shines brighter than the sun. Confession and repentance in needed prior to redemption.
Most people that rightfully criticised others of wrongs, if you are get hold of their list of wrongs you will be surprised of their past evil action against self and others, probably current ones, too.
Let's be honest, all humans are a mixture (nature) of good and evil, Dr. Kedrick Pickering not excluded, neither do you and I.
