GREAT HARBOUR, Jost van Dyke, VI- Deputy Premier and Minister for Financial Services, Labour and Trade, Honourable Lorna G. Smith (AL), OBE has pointed to several areas in need of addressing on Jost van Dyke, following a meeting with business owners there on Saturday, July 15, 2023.

The visit was part of her territory-wide Business Round Table meetings to identify how the Government of the Virgin Islands can best support the business community in order to help drive economic growth.

Hon Smith described the field trip as “Another great business round table discussion with Jost van Dyke businesses yesterday. I was especially pleased to see Miss Gertrude as well as the many other business persons.”

According to the Deputy Premier, JvD is another of our “tourism bread baskets with some easily fixed needs: getting immigration and customs availability right so our guests spend more time enjoying themselves, responding quickly to Labour issues, more administrative services and so on.”

‘Crumbling infrastructure’

Noting that the island was busy for ferries and White Bay was packed with boats, Hon Smith highlighted the need to address the “crumbling” infrastructure on the sister island, including the ferry docks.

“We must fix the dock at Doghole, re-establish the one in Great Harbour and fix the crumbling infrastructure on the island.

“Our sister islands are significant revenue earners. Let’s help them to make the destination truly a top ten!” Hon Smith commented.

While I agree I must say the VIP Government has paid more attention to JVD than past governments as some of these issues are there long even since her husband was in charge.

I thank the government for keeping their word and building the new primary school facility on JVD. This is progress.

The VI is a progressing community which transitioned from a little sleepy hollow and a subsistence agricultural economy to a twin-pillar service economy—Tourism and Financial services. It boasts now of having one of highest standard of living, quality of life, and per capita income in the region. Nevertheless, maintaining a healthy, robust, sustainable, and resilient economy demands a First World physical infrastructure , ie, electricity, roads , water, sewage, drainage, ports( sea and air), telecommunications, etc. However, designing and building an infrastructure cannot be just for today; it must built with the capacity to easy expand to accommodate and facilitate growth and development. Moreover, in addition to design and construction, there must be a robust, responsive, and agile, functional maintenance and repair programme so as attain at least the functional lifecycles and to meeting their design intent in supporting national growth and development to attain and sustain First World. It is about planning , planning, replanning, recapitalizing, reconstruction, etc. Infrastructure has definite design lifecycles and planning should be initiated for timely replacement. The VI has a myriad of needs, but roads and other physical infrastructure must be a top priority. Different funding sources should be explored to find roads. The whole community benefits from roads, ie, operating private vehicles for leisure, using public transportation, trucking, moving construction equipment, taxiing, responding to fire services, ambulance, police, etc services, and laying of water, sewage, drainage, electric, telecommunications lines.

I have never seen nor heard of any country who can fix all the national concerns whether infrastructure or otherwise. Only in the BVI there's this expectation and demand.

@@Manjack, the Uppercase bandit, you are so myopic and conditioned by the colonialists that you can see no farther than your nose straight ahead. If you were not so shortsighted and letting colonialists dictate things for you, you would have the ability to view things objectively 360 degrees. You would have observed that Manjack talk about a myriad of subjects , including race. In case you have deliberately forgotten, slavery, colonialism, racism, classism, etc, are all an integral part of BVI history. It is a dark part of its history but it cannot be forgotten and must be brought to light. Marcus Garvey: A people who don’t have original knowledge past history origin and culture, is like a tree without root. Uppercase Bandit, give us some of your original thoughts nah, not just all criticism of bloggers who may share your view or philosophy. Or it is you MO just to criticize? We are yearning to hear from you.

I am not sure where the infrastructure in JVD is decaying. We have done a good job with the limited resources made available to us - the roads are ok although there are still some parts cordoned off for repairs, electricity and water are normally ok - not for the last week but still better than Tortola.
We also have polite people and not the loud rude and uneducated people from Tortola.

Why does one need a meeting to know roads need fixing. Somebody from public works can't drive around and report back to the government? Kye Rhymer can't drive around and report back to the government? Lorna playing all of ayo. Like someone said earlier, comfort to a fool's ears. People are too easily impressed with nonsense. Let's all go to have meeting in JVD and then post that we believe the infrastructure need fixing. SMH.
