BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has confirmed that fuel prices will most likely increase in the Virgin Islands due to ongoing global tensions.

Premier Wheatley was the guest on Honestly Speaking on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, when he said that while fuel supply is not an issue, fuel prices will eventually rise.

“I’ve had discussions with the companies that BVIEC relies on for fuel, so actually the supply of fuel to the Virgin Islands is not a concern at this time in terms of availability of fuel, but the price will be a concern to us…we’ll have to brace ourselves for when oil prices rise, you know everything gets more expensive.”

Currently, the Sol Group (Sol) is contracted by the BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) as the company’s fuel supplier.

Very little we can do to influence fuel cost- Premier

Host Pastor Claude O. Skelton-Cline has been pressing the government every week on his programme to make its plan for the VI known during uncertain times, which may be coming sooner rather than later.

“What, if any, preparations are being made for those kinds of eventualities, particularly relative to fuel and food?” Skelton-Cline asked.

Premier Wheatley said people must first understand that the VI is part of a global village.

“Oftentimes, we are insulated, so to speak, from the whole concept of how we are connected to the world. We see things happening in faraway places, and no one ever makes the connection of what happens in these faraway places to what happens in the BVI. It’s only really when things start to happen that we realise things affect me as well.”

He added that the war in the Middle East does have an impact on the VI, and one of the ways is fuel.

“We are heavily dependent on fuel, and it’s really very little we can do to influence the cost of fuel, but one thing we need to do is make ourselves less dependent on fuel.”

    To Little Too Late

True, Premier, but you were Overseas frolicking, and homeland partying this problem and others were in the making. You were blindsided by others lies and your own egocentric ambitious mindset.
Unfortunately for the majority of the B.V.I people, and others that are living among us you are only now waking up for your illutionary dream, as if you did already knew this one and other problems that we now facing are a surprise to us, to the majority of us but not to of us.

A particular verse of scripture in the bible book of proverbs spoke about the wisdom of the ant. It say to slugger, "Look to the ant you slugger, they are a wise people that gather in the summer for winter time (crisis time), did you? No. You haven't, but rather, you wasted our well needed finance, $Ms, on unnecessary ventures, etc., etc. Now, according to you it is a we thing, not a you and the rest of you cabinet team thing. Other B.V.I political cabinet leaders before you done the same naive thing. The truth is no more, and is no less than the truth.

You can control the timing of the rise and the amount...Prices need only rise on new stock. Govt must seek proof of new stocks and invoices from all companies. That's a critical role Govt can play. Or they so greedy and wicked they will start increasing prices on their stock on hand.

It’s unfortunate that none of the major Caribbean countries that produces oil does not currently produce enough to easily supply the region with its energy needs
