CAPPOON’S BAY, Tortola, VI– Jr Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Hon Shereen D. Flax-Charles (AL) says politicians and aspiring politicians in the Virgin Islands (VI) have officially gone on campaign mode for the 2023 constitutionally due elections.

Hon Flax-Charles made the statements during the annual First District Report 2022 event held at Cappoon’s Bay Recreational Ground on Saturday, January 29, 2022.

Politicians starting campaigns in 'full strength' - Hon Flax Charles

“Not too many days ago I got the nudge that we have officially entered talking season. Of course, I know what this means in our culture. What we mean is that politicians are beginning their campaigning in full strength.”

Hon Flax-Charles added; however, that the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) team does not believe in a temporary or reactive ‘talking season,’ rather, the team has been diligently engaged in acting and delivering.

“It goes without saying that the First District is one that has consistently seen results over the years, you have stuck with your champion and he has stuck with you, continuing to execute, act and deliver on the promises made over the course.”

Hon Flax-Charles added, “I am honored to be a part of our Premier and all the team’s earnest effort to transform not only this district and community but all across our beautiful shores to become a territory, ready to engage with the dynamics of the new and emerging global market.”

Meanwhile, the Jr Minister said the First District for many years has always been to her, a sort of personification of the culture of the Virgin Islands.

“This area is so beautifully rich in history and contains so many of the landmarks of our heritage I can be honest and say that I have been inspired by the artistry of your murals to recreate many similar across the islands.”

More support for youths in the VI

“It is high time that we better incorporate all people and culture into our tourism product. This is one of the ways in which we will reinvigorate our national economy, by re-introducing new products and new elements to all domestic markets.

Hon Flax-Charles said at the forefront of a potent economy are the youths who have the creativity, progressive thinking, and energy to spark real sustainable, and lasting change in the VI.

“This is why, with the continued support of the Premier, I am eager to continue developing and launching programmes, projects, and initiatives to empower and engage our young entrepreneurs.”

The proof of the pudding is in the eating, so they say... Anyone remember "1000 jobs in 1000 days"? Tell me that wasn't more talk and again, using the youth as though the youth don't have eyes to see, ears to hear and brains to remember...

At this stage, the best thing both sides could do for the youth is to let them emigrate en masse to actually create real lives for themselves. The current territorial model of building this country as a playground for tourists and not giving one whit about the youth until election time is played out. Just stop. If either side was about the youth, the college would be in a better state. If either side was about the youth, schools would be in a better state. If either side was about the youth, the apprenticeship programme would be going from strength to strength, liaising with academic institutions throughout the region. If either side was about the youth, CTL High and air quality in academic institutions would not STILL be a thing. Give it a rest already; you're only fooling yourselves, not the youth.

Neither side is about the youth, and that is painful to see given how many Ministers have history as educators. EVERY graduating class of EVERY institution of this territory needs to pay KEEN attention to what is actually being done for the youth, apart from constant talk and before the 2023 elections. You cannot only look at the youth as cash cows to prop up a struggling Social Security system. You cannot only look at the youth as election meal tickets who will do as their elders say. If that is the route you seek to take, good luck; that retirement bubble isn't going to prop itself up forever.

If all you are going to do is talk, then model this territory along the lines of exporting the youth to seek a better life elsewhere and focus on remittances from abroad when they do get a leg up abroad and actually have a chance to reach their potential, something that is NOT possible here with infrastructure and systems as they are. Prepare them for the outside world, not just for here alone.
