ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Despite repeated calls for the Virgin Islands public to come forward voluntarily to be immunised against COVID-19 before the vaccine shelf-life ended, Minister for Health and Social Development Honourable Carvin Malone (AL) said nearly 700 vials of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine was wasted.

“I want to acknowledge that we still had to discard some 685 vials of the vaccines in the Territory on account of them expiring on the 31st July; and with the present situation globally with more and more waves of different variants causing countries to once again close or implement more stringent travel protocols, vaccines supplies are even shorter, and procurement is even more difficult,” Hon Malone said.

At the time, he was delivering an update on the latest COVID-19 situation in the territory on Friday, August 6, 2021.

Nonetheless, Honourable Malone stated, “your Government remains steadfast and continues to do all that it can to ensure that the people of this Territory have every opportunity to get vaccinated. I am confident that we will get to the 80 per cent needed for optimal protection against COVID-19 and its variants and that we will once again safely re-open; but again, we cannot and will not without the participation and willingness of you, the people in doing your part.”

According to the latest update from Government on August 6, 2021, some 12,187 persons are fully vaccinated and 4, 403 are partially vaccinated.

Expired vaccines 'properly disposed of'

Meanwhile, the Minister for Health and Social Development said the Virgin Islands owes a debt of gratitude to the United Kingdom Government for providing the 3,040 doses of AstraZeneca received recently and are now being administered.

“The 685 vials were in fact properly disposed of in a careful and protocol manner, and we are now only administering only from the new batch of the 3,040 received,” he assured.

The UK had previously donated over 30,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Why were the unwanted vaccines wasted? Why were they not donated to other islands in need?
    • Put the blame where it belongs (08/08/2021, 22:04) Like (15) Dislike (19) Reply
Why did the unvaccinated people let them go to waste? That is the question.

I'm not a VIP, but you can't blame the government for this.
    • This is precisely the question... (12/08/2021, 10:36) Like (0) Dislike (0) Reply
It is NOT a blaming question. It is simply a valid question in light of the fact that in the early days of vaccination, our neighbours Dominica kindly donated doses even though they didn't have to, in solidarity during a pandemic. In fact, Where was our reciprocation, in solidarity with other countries and territories in the region who are in the same storm?

Anyone who sees this question as problematic and doesn't look beyond to see the bigger picture of solidarity vs self-centredness and selfishness IN A GLOBAL PANDEMIC is part of the problem, honestly. Actions and attitudes have consequences. Solidarity over self-centredness any damn day.

What is the basis for your claim that it is a poison? Tens of millions have been vaccinated world wide, with about 1 per million experiencing some form of adverse effect. Moreover, it’s just a piece of genetic material wrapped in fat (lipids) neither of which are considered toxic. But, a senseless waste when people world wide are clamoring for vaccines.

It is sad that many persons have a suicidal mindset. They think that what will may happen to them will cannot be avoided. They live by chance and luck, not by faith. So they rearly take preventative action to avoid even their own death.
Faith is an action word. Faith is active, not passive.
Many claim to be connected to God, but often refused to accept God help through others, that God is using to help save man from selfdestruction. I and others that know are appealing to our luck-and-believers that living among us to exercise in God's life power through whatever means, and whoever He is using to channel help to us.
The 685 vials of anti-covid virus vaccines exposed a very supersticous height of willful negligence, ignorance, arrogance, and wrong judgment of choice.
However, let continue on our mission to help save lives.
In the fight against the covid-19, one (1) ounce of good is 100% more helpful to us than one (1) billion ton of bad. Let us do good. God, our Creator will increase good to us, if we exercise living faith, daily. Faith without good works has no life sustaining.
Luck, chance, random speculations, groundless belief, false religious pratices, and others unproven methods are all useless against the covid-19 deadly effects.
Love remain life top medicine. Let us share live among ourselve, and others.

This is poor administrative management, So long I am hearing we have this amt, and they are expiring this date and vaccination is progressing slowly,, Administration should have done an assessment using all the data and determine from early, we have to donate some if these to the country that need them starting with donating 500 then see how it goes,, Each Dose is money, we are known all over the world for been good at, "Throwing away money".

I personally think they waited to late to do promotion and properly educated the public on their vaccination initiatives. Not sure if they were properly informed about the real effects and benefits on time to be able to have more vaccination drives.

This is my personal opinion educating the public more might have lessened the amount wasted.

It's not they could have ship them somewhere else. It goes beyond that the red tape as we say have to be taken into consideration. Also we don't know what agreement was made between the UK and our government. Maybe We can be held accountable if any thing happens. Lots of things are not as simple as we may assume.

Why no one wants to talk about the fact that the AZ vaxx was suspended/halted/stopped from being used in other countries......yet that is what is available here and YOU THINK that people would want to take it knowing this.....? You wonder why they expired.....
    • Doctor Know (09/08/2021, 14:06) Like (1) Dislike (1) Reply
It was politics not medicine. The EU was very pissed of that AZ supplied the UK before them even though the UK ordered first. AZ has now delivered 1 billion doses. The number of alleged cases of serious side effects is tiny, how many here? None. The incidence of blood clots is equal with all vaccines and is not proven to be due to the vaccines and is tiny. You are 100 times more likely to get blood clots from flying on an aero plane and thousands of times more likely if you catch covid.

Oh wake up people, so tired of people blaming the government about lack of education, this disease has been around for 18 months now, do your own educating, it’s your body not the government’s, it’s your responsibility, stop looking for someone to blame because it will do you no good when you’re sick with the illness. The government have done so much but some are just beyond being helped.

You cant use common sense when it comes to covid. The sheep who wait for the govt to tell them what to put on their face and inject in their bodies will attack you. They are mindless and refuse to do ANY research.
