“We don’t have gangs!” Lesmore Smith
At the general assembly held at the Multi-purpose Spots Complex, September 8, 2012, Mr. Smith, whose firm was contracted to provide security for the school, stated that “We don’t have gangs, we had” and added that the gangs that existed have re-evaluated themselves and changed for the better.
“I know we had some visitors from overseas who came and looked at the school and there were some different graffiti, and all those stuff they found that said we had gangs. I am going to say this morning we had gangs. We no longer have gangs because the gangs that we had, they have just looked in their own mirrors and eliminated themselves…. We no longer have gangs at the Elmore Stoutt High School; we have progressive people of today for tomorrow.”
Mr. Smith went on to urge the students to work along with the security officers attached to the school, “They are only doing their job.”
He added, “first thing in the morning on your arrival, the first person you meet is the security officers, I want you to follow and respect the security. There are simple guidelines that the school has provided for us; you must have the right socks, to ensure that your hair style is the way it ought to be, to ensure that your shirt is nicely tucked in, to ensure if you have to leave the campus that a parent takes you or you must have a paper from an administrator. Don’t be mad with us, we are only following the rules.”
He told the students that if the right measures and guidelines are not put in place, it leaves the school vulnerable for persons to come on campus and create some mass stabbing/shooting.
“I know you young people are very familiar with the internet and when you look around you, day after day, time after time throughout the US there are some disasters in some school, college or institution. The question I’ll ask you, do you want someday at the Elmore High School for that to happen? Because at the end of the day, I don’t think your little minds are capable of enduring such mass destruction, so I’m asking you to help us be the security for you.
In conclusions he encouraged the students to have a change of attitude, towards the school, and persons placed there to help the school be successful, “it’s a new beginning, new horizon, it’s a new Elmore Stoutt High School, not because of the principal but of the new attitude you have possessed within your selves.”
