‘We are set up to be one against the other’- Dr Melvin A. Turnbull
During his sermon at the Virgin Islands Emancipation March and Celebration Service on Sunday, August 3, 2025, Dr Turnbull said Alvin O. Thompson’s book ‘The Haunting Past’ referenced that colonialism resulted in four major things, and one of them is ‘The Tradition of Political Fragmentation’.
“Do you wonder why we are so divided? It’s been orchestrated, even our system of running our country, we are set up to be one against the other,” he said.
The residues of the divide & conquer strategy
Dr Turnbull explained that Opposition simply means to oppose, and the police are called the police force.
“No diplomacy, I got to keep you in control.”
These, he said, are residues of the divide and conquer strategy from the playbook called ‘Manifest Destiny’
However, Dr Turnbull encouraged others not to shrink from this past and this part of their story.
“Don’t forget the contribution of our local heroes and sheroes…Our ancestors endured what was meant for harm, but God, in God’s mysterious way, God in his mercy and his wonderful works, caused us to survive and to have purpose.”
The 2025 Virgin Islands Emancipation Festival officially concluded on Saturday, August 9, 2025. The 71st celebration was held under the theme 'Embrace the Past, Let Unity Thrive, as We Celebrate Emancipation Festival 2025'.

Why preach the Love of God on the church rustrom, but continue spewing hateful, and deceitful words out of your mouth?
Didn't you know the that thay we Africans are equally as evil by nature as all other ethics humans are? Look no further for the answer than here in the British Virgin Islands. We are our closest enemy. The way we treat each other, badmouth each other, lie to each other, under pay each other, overcharge each other, disturb each other, ignore each other, steal from each other, murder each other, expose each other, and do other decisive actions against each other best interest prove that we are no better than others. Hate is not a skin color, nor is it human physical diversities, rather it is the devil in humans being manifested by actions, no ethnics exempted. It time to stop your racist rambling, others like you need to stop, too.
