ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- Demand for direct flight access to the Virgin Islands (VI) remains high, and the Government of the Virgin Islands is exploring its options.

This is according to Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) in his Territorial Address at Maria’s by the Sea on May 20, 2025.

According to the Premier, who also holds the portfolio for tourism, enhanced airlift capacity is vital for the VI’s tourism sector's growth.

He said that in October 2024, Caribbean Airlines began connecting the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (TBLIA) with Puerto Rico and hubs in Antigua, Barbados, and Trinidad. LIAT 2020 started daily regional flights to Beef Island in December 2024.

The Premier further said American Airlines' direct Miami service, launched in June 2023, often operates up to six flights daily.

Demand for direct access ‘high’

“Demand for direct access to the BVI remains high, and we are exploring more route options,” Premier Wheatley said.

Meanwhile, the long-anticipated Business Case for the airport expansion at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport has been completed, and- according to Premier Wheatley- the way is clear for the project to take off and take our tourism product to new heights.

“Increased airlift is good news for putting heads in beds,” Dr Wheatley said.

If we are having more flights to the BVI, please clean up the country. The bush is overgrown and I don’t even need to mention the Roads (especially in Hodge’s Creek/Paraquita Bay). We market ourselves as a tourist destination But can’t even maintain it for residents.

we steady investing people to our little place but what is being done for our people just look around at where you and me reside day after day

what is government gaining in terms of income you know dollar and cents to boost our Piggy Bank and fix up the public roads; try stabilizing the power supply and water and sewage systems

stop giving away our country or let the public know how much money government makes annually for these airlines because they are using our infrastructure: takeoff: landing: airport security and and that beat goes on

Nothing is wrong with exploring new direct flight to the B.V.I. But how about working towards the finish product of the many uncomplete projects been started, and those already in their early stage ongoing.

My talk about new plans, but proving unable to prioritized time wise, and show proper financial accountability for the many projects on the table, and in the planning stage, where is the in hand finance to complete those started months ago, and those started si ce, and those in planning, and those that you will inform us about this year, and next year?

I am 76 years plus months old, that is approximately 30 year, or there about, older than you are. Can't you see, or can you see from east to west, north to south, and in between that that the B.V.I infrastructure is becoming more shamble fast?
Why the hip hop rush about things that can wait for later, and move at sloat pace about priority things that are beneficial to our best lively hood now, and in years to come, why, Premier, why?
Why the rush for independence, but showing little readiness for its diversitifying negative empacts against, especially the poor, the minimum wages earners, and the unemployed people that have daily need for daily survival, why?

The way is not clear. Their is no business case or strategic case or any of the other 3 cases because no one has seen them, no one has yet given their feed back to you on them in public meetings and so you have no idea which way to go forward because we have not been shown the reports yet and so you cannot know what we want.

You are not the Dictator of the VI, yet. That will only come when you have your Independence. Then you can have your Dictatorship and we know that is why you keep pushing so hard for your Independence.

Your Independence will not be Independence for the people of the VI.

You will take this country back more than 70 years.

Please, please, please do something about the space allotted for the departure security area. That set up where you have to put your items in the containers and then struggle to lift them up and take them through the sliding doors into the screening area is archaic and totally embarrassing.
Also, it’s about time we got up to speed electronically with the boarding passes. We should have the option to use an electronic boarding pass.

Direct access is all good and fine but it doesn't mean much when you have significant travel disruptions because AA won't land when it's rainy and wet because the runway is too short.

    .Hmmm!

    Get it done, Premier Wheatley!

Just wondering if this makes you realize we don't need an expensive (and environmental unresponsible) airport extension.

If we increase the connections to other airports (in the region and South US), focus on improve our infrastructure (roads, electricity, water), we will be in a really good position!

I understand the need for more destinations and direct routes for aircrafts to drive more revenue but lets be real here, we ain't ready for such a thing. Our biggest problem in the BVI is our lack of proper infrastructure and mangers with no vision. The world is advancing while the BVI airport stays behind. For example, look at all the other Caribbean countries and their progression with their airport and runways. Their terminal buildings are built to handle large flow of traffic and aesthetically futuristic and clean and they don't even use US Dollars. Their runways are long enough to handle large aircrafts with direct flights to the US, Canada, and other European countries. The airport at beef island is poorly designed and each area creates a bottle neck at both arrival and departure especially at security screening because only ONE walk-through metal detector is available. Lets not even talk about the arrival area that has no A/C. These other airports are leaving us in the dust. Beef island is the only airport where planes park like cars in a parking lot. We need to extend the runway and before that can even happen we need a proper terminal building to handle the load. And please stop going to these private or ''Chinese'' investors for such upgrades when we are a British country under the UK. Our help should be coming from the UK the same way France takes care of Martinique and I'm very sure Richard Branson would bring his virgin atlantic brand and aircrafts to the BVI direct from london.

      Your comments are so mumu.
You know why those poor countries have big fancy airports that get you so excited?
      a) because they are islands that have big areas of flat land that we do not
      b) because they begged money from China and other debtors who now completely OWN THEIR A**es.
You sound like you a little precious person who likes shiny things and is jealous because others have shiny things that you wish you had.
"We need big big jets so we can play act like we are a big big country!"
"We need AC in the arrivals area!"
"We demand sweeter air freshener and softer soap in the public restrooms!"
