BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI—  The Virgin Islands (VI) is performing well despite global pressures, the Premier of the Virgin Islands and Chairman of the Virgin Islands Party (VIP), Dr the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), has said while urging residents to recognise the territory’s progress and unite behind its future.

“We are doing very well as a territory despite all of the global challenges and pressures that we face,” the Premier said on Talking Points on ZBVI 780 AM on Monday, July 20, 2026. He added: “I think the greatest challenge we have is belief in ourselves, and a lot of times, you know, we are, I would say, unaware of the blessing that it is to live in the Virgin Islands versus living in a lot of other places in the world. We certainly take that for granted.”

Tourism numbers soaring

Premier Wheatley stated that the Virgin Islands’ current tourism numbers underscore the territory’s recovery, stating that visitor arrivals reached roughly 800,000 to 850,000 over the past six months, figures he described as “almost equivalent” to the total arrivals the territory recorded in 2019, before the pandemic.

“The Virgin Islands is a great place to be able to live, a great place to be able to do business, a great place to visit,” he said. “While we have challenges, just like any other country in the world, we just have to be cognizant of the fact that we're not doing as badly as some may have you think, and the challenge for us is unity.”

VI can reach its true potential through unity- Premier

Despite the positive indicators, the Premier identified unity as the territory’s main challenge and appealed for unity across the Virgin Islands’ diverse population, calling on leaders and public figures to promote togetherness rather than division.

“We have people who come from many different places in the world, different backgrounds, different religions, different races, but we all must be united by a common love for the Virgin Islands. We need persons and public figures and persons who have a platform to promote unity more than division.”

The Premier cited countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, where deep divisions exist, arguing that this has hindered national progress.

Who exactly is the "we" in question? Because that money is definitely not trickling down to the general population and people are struggling more than ever before. Cost of living is through the roof.

Many things are we doing, yes, but very well is not one of them. In fact the opposite of doing well is ongoing contradicting to what our Premier would have us to believe and accept. When the "we are doing very well" dispise all the global pressures, less that approximately 20% of our current population agree with this been said, then that is clear proof that we are not even close to doing well. Let God be alone be truthful. Humans are generally liars, especially political leaders, and others of other ambitious mindset, too.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

We are unified in knowing once you are gone things will get better.

We can stop only thinking only of Independence and how to get hold of money (to distribute to buddies) through the SECRET airport project.

Be sure the people are unified.

That comment is a slap in the faces of people who are expecting more from this country. We are definitely making the money but where is it going? This island is an embarrassment to the neighboring islands that use EC currency, etc.. Shame on you leaders. We have nothing to show for ourselves than God's creation of the beaches and blue waters. These leaders must go. Can't even get proper school necessities like SOAP and TOILET PAPER for OUR CHILDREN.

Premier speak for yourself. YOU are doing well. You have water in your taps on a daily basis, you just gave yourself a huge salary increase and benefits. You are not drawing a salary based on the meagre minimum wage that has prevailed for donkey years. You will benefit greatly from the Greedy Bill which was enacted by you and your cabinet colleagues solely for the benefit of legislators and at a time when the territory was reeling from the effects of Covid. You clearly are pretending to be blind to the serious issues facing us as a territory and are taking us for fools. But elections must eventually be called and then you will see the writing on the wall.
