‘We are being whipped psychologically’ by the UK- Hon Mark H. Vanterpool

Fourth District Representative Hon Mark H. DUFF’S BOTTOM, Tortola, VI- Fourth District Representative Hon Mark H. Vanterpool has not been holding back his thoughts on the United Kingdom’s current position on the Virgin Islands (VI), including the threat of direct rule and forcing the territory to implement recommendations coming out of a biased Commission of Inquiry (CoI) sponsored by the UK during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the ‘statesman’, the UK is treating the VI just like how slaves were treated, and this should not be allowed to continue.

‘We are not colonial slaves anymore’

“Let my people go, we are not colonial slaves anymore, we are not. We are not people who can’t think for ourselves. You know that was the hallmark of slavery? The people had to do what the master say because they couldn’t think for themselves, and if they didn’t do it they were beaten and trodden,” Hon Vanterpool said during the budget debate at the Continuation of the Ninth Sitting of the Fourth Session of the Fourth House of Assembly at Save the Seed Energy Centre in Duff’s Bottom, Tortola on December 20, 2022.

Hon Vanterpool has maintained that the UK has been trying to prevent the VI from achieving self-determination and has instead sought to hold the territory in a state of colonialism, which is against the UN Charter on Decolonisation.

‘The whips are there’

In fact, he said the VI people are being whipped, though not literally.

“We don’t see the whips right now…but the whips are there. We don’t see them, but we are being whipped psychologically by the United Kingdom. We are being told that whether you believe in same-sex marriage or not you got to accept it. We are being told that whether you believe in capital punishment or not you have to take it.

“Yet when we say we want to do certain things we have to get assent by the governor.”

Hon Vanterpool disagreed that the VI should have to get its legislation, which is passed by its elected representatives, assent to by an unelected Governor.

“That is colonialism, assent by the colonial master, to do what you want for your country. And we are accepting that, we have slumbered, we have gone to sleep…Rip Van Winkle, wake up.

“United Kingdom, let our people go, let us go. We are not your slaves anymore.”

‘Commonwealth Parliamentary Association is nonsense’

Among other things, Hon Vanterpool said he was opposed to the VI being a member of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, which he labelled as nonsense.

“It is a way for the British Government, the UK and the monarchy to hold on to this thing about the commonwealth, in the pretext of the association.

“I am not going to subscribe to that. I want us to exodus,” Hon Vanterpool stated.

This would have been much easier accomplished had you the politicians been open and honest and not for years reaped and raped the territory’s purse. Now that shit have proverbially hit the ceiling you want the same people who you have mistreated and Ill-treated for years to stand in solidarity with you against the UK.
Yes what the UK may be doing may be wrong BUT their presence at least gets you all a Bit in shape. You have I’ll-treated islanders black people of your own defendants, color of skin and maybe slave tribes for years as slaves( work permits and bonds ) unable to freely move to work for whom ever they want or else they are punished whilst you hold the cream of the crop jobs whilst you kept them before your feet whilst still psychologically pressing them but now you see them as important to your cause.
The UK has exposed your troddened laws of immigration, juror laws you have manipulated, your refusal to approve trade licenses, you politicians and leaders have broken many laws and the same UN laws for years whilst ill treating island people.
Take a seat out on your seat belts let things get fixed first then we may join you in calling for independence until then do as you are told. Do unto others as you would like others to do unto you.

Just like the rest of the world the BVI is still staggering from the worse pandemic in the last 100 years where no government or country knew what to do. While we were dealing with that or trying to deal with it the Governor launched what appears to be a non transparent COI while we were dying and sick and our economy challenged. They help to create a perfect storm to add to the already natural storm to do what they always wanted to do. They will soon find out that we are resilient people. Continue the fight Hon. Vanterpool.

Imagine where the world would be if Moses and the Israelites had the same ignorant mentality about coming out from under the Egyptians as some of us have for coming out from under the UK and their colonialistic rule. The more things change the more they remain the same. Remember Moses was not a sugar cake but he fulfilled God's purpose for the people.

The BVI can complete and implement every recommendation from that questionable COI process and it still will never be enough to satisfy the UK. Just wait and see. The reality is the UK wants to rule all OTs directly so they can give their friends jobs as the economy in the UK is real bad. If we think we had it bad under elected officials then wait until you are ruled directly by Brits. BVI be careful what you are asking for because you will regret it. Wake up BVI.

don't tell us-island people to leave.what you need to do,is pass laws to say 'no island people should be allowed to enter the bvi legally'then you will not have island people in bvi.you allow us to come in to look work etc.you allow us to settle, buy land and build house and even have children here, who are at school, but everytime we criticise what is wrong against us,all you can say is'go back where you come from'?make it easier for us,and just make laws,so that we dont come.but we are here and we must be protected by the laws here.

Mark is correct. Since you only looking at one side then let me give you a little history lesson about the other side so that you and others like you can be sure to keep account on all events and persons and who was behind all of this confusion now and why and why now. Recap the following because there is more history lessons to come.....
      - The UK is listed as one of the most corrupt country that hides their corruption yet they still remain in charge of their own affairs. They cannot suspend their constitution because they have none.
      - Every country has systems to deal with any issues but the UK want a one man Governor to intervene and do whatever they please through him.
      - A non transparent COI by the Governor that hides his wrong and inefficiencies but exposes who they wanted to expose for unethical reasons which will soon be known.
      - A public service that has FAILED and failed in upgrading for 40 years and it is solely under the Governor but he gets exempted from the failure or from being known as the failure.
      - Questionable actions of pass governors and Commissioner of Police swept under the rug.
      - Man died and was missing but only the Governor knew where he was to find him. The Governor was never questioned. Not even the police dogs nor the many police men could have found the missing man that turned out to be dead but the Governor knew actually where to work.
      - UK resisted doing a COI in the heat of Covid in the UK because it was not the best thing to do at the time since the UK needed to save lives and the economy in the UK but did one on the BVI.
      - Had public officers who they want arrested for breach of trust but protecting others who are assisting in their plots.
      - In other Overseas territories where it was found wrong doing by governors they were sent back to the UK and are roaming free without any charges or arrest and a new Governor sent to replace them.
      - One black Governor sent to the Caribbean in the last 50 years and it was in 2021 in Bermuda. How do you explain this in this day and age other than racism.

Will stop there for now but let's keep track of everything. The point is no one man should have the power to look into everyone and go at who they want ethically or not and the system does not allow it to be reciprocal. This is where the real chaos comes. It is wrong and you cannot do wrong claiming you are trying to get right. At least public officers can be suspended or fired and elected officials can be voted out but the system totally exempts governors and the UK from punishment for unethical and questionable actions. This is why it is time for independence with solid systems in place to govern us because we will never do anything good or right in their sight unless they are doing it or they are governing. The BVI is no worse than any other countries but that is what they and people like you want us to believe.

There is such a thing as psychological warfare. And yes the UK is in full warfare mode. The Andrew matter was dramatized for maximum impact on the minds of the residents of the VI. We are being led to distrust, resent, doubt and condemn our own. We will stupidly be joining the UK as they have in all of that for us already. Wake up! And yes, our own have done some things that they should not have done. Our challenge now is can we stand as a VI family for our future or will we allow the UK to further divide and conquer. Good mark or bad Mark, he is right and that is what we must stand on. We are not free to decide for ourselves as the UN declares. What they are doing is just flat out wrong. Time for the Exodus! ????????
    • @Agreeable One (30/12/2022, 09:59) Like (14) Dislike (1) Reply
You are 100% correct. To add, the Andrew matter shows that there are systems in place to address such matters and he or whomever will have their day in court. Our systems also allows for elected officials to be voted out or in. Our systems also allows for public officers to be suspended or fired. But there is no system in place in the 21st century to evaluate the work of the Governor and UK and also address their actions when questionable. The people have no recourse in this respect and this is TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE & WRONG in this day and age. Let's move forward now as nothing will be given to us.

Hon. Mark Vanterpool, Rep. D4. It sounds to me that you are reapings a harvest of the seeds that you and others have sown, in many, and my opinion.

Remember, not only have most past and present politicians have psychologically mistreated us, (the public) their boss, have also mistreated us physically, socially, and economically.

    "What goes around comes around."
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." That means: Treat your neighbours as you will have them treat you.

    Advice, and well which to:

Hon. Mark H. Vanterpool, Rep. D4, stop stressing yourself. Calm down, and enjoy the remainder of 2022.

May 2023 and onwards be brighter years for you, and your family, and associates partners in business.

You are clearly off target. As a female to me the UK relationship with the BVI and all their Caribbean overseas territories reminds me of a battered and abusive relationship where the man keep making the woman feel as if she can do nothing right unless he does it for her and also will never make it in life and do anything positive if she leaves him. This is wrong on all fronts. The time has come to move on but with strong policies and laws in place as is being done to hold all accountable at all times. The BVI is no worse than any where else in the world but the UK is trying to portray otherwise.

Listen up. The Virgin Islands is at a crossroad we must make a decision on our status and relations with the UK. All indications are we Don't want colonial rule they have done nothing for us, there are just a figure head. Give the Virgin Islanders a chance to make their own decision No we are not insecure we know what we want like most other countries
they decided on their course of action we would like the opportunity to do the same. Games, I don't play games, this is not a game this is our Life our parents and future children's lives a decision cannot be made without considering the blood sweat and tears of our ancestors. not the greedy and personal gain of a few. Listen I make no apologies leaving is an option that you have use it. finally Virgin Islands are for Virgin islanders and those who sincerely make here their home.

I am so tired of these Socialites spewing their crap to the People as if they are all momoos. Speak with sense and not to undermine people. Speak with truth, facts and simplicity not on personal gains. There is no way the BVI is near or even a tad bit ready for Independence. I am sorry, but Governance, accountability, transparency, Leadership and Humanity has yet to gain any growth and people have yet to trust their Representatives and the Government Sectors. So who would be beneficial of Independence? Only the cronies who have the privilege of opressing the commoners.
