“I acknowledge the concerns raised regarding residents’ access to potable water on Jost van Dyke, and I wish to clarify the circumstances,” the minister said. 

In a press release on September 29, 2026, the minister stated that the disruption occurred between the treatment plant and the reservoir after a leak developed in the system. The Water and Sewerage Department’s technical team was required to troubleshoot and address the problem.

The release added that this comes amid concerns from residents about the reliability of the island’s water supply. While the department attempted to maintain service by pumping water directly through the distribution line, that line also developed leaks.

The minister attributed the additional failures to the age of the infrastructure, stating that the leaks “resulted in a temporary interruption to regular water distribution".

Issue rectified

He added, "I am pleased to restate that the issue has since been rectified. During a community meeting held on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, residents agreed that constructing a standpipe would provide a dependable alternative and help ensure access to water during any future interruptions."

The release further stated that potable water is now available for purchase from the standpipe located near the Water and Sewerage Department. The facility operates from Monday to Friday, between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM.

Residents wishing to access the service must contact the department at 1 (284) 468-9429. A representative will record the meter information, issue an invoice, and process payment in accordance with the department’s billing procedures.

The minister thanked residents for their patience and cooperation, saying the Ministry of Communication and Works remains committed to improving the reliability and resilience of the island’s water-distribution system.
