ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Rejected politician Myron V. Walwyn, accused of destroying the Virgin Islands education system through years of mismanagement and financial scandals, has now petitioned the Government of Andrew A. Fahie (R1) to fix it ‘urgently’.

“Education is the axis upon which all industries in a country turn. Whatever issues we are having that are affecting the educational pursuits of our children let us get them fixed urgently,” Walwyn said in a June 7, 2021, Facebook post.

Walwyn trying to stay relevant?

Mr Walwyn, a former At-Large legislator who walked away as the biggest loser after an overwhelming defeat at the February 25, 2019, General Elections in the Virgin Islands, is now the latest exiled voice using the Fahie government as a platform to stay relevant.

The former embattled legislator in his Facebook post also said education is as important as the economy; however, Walwyn is said to have allegedly destroyed the education system after 8 years as Education Minister.

The former at-large representative, who publically said locals could no longer be guaranteed economic protection in their own country, had three Chief Education Officers in 4 years, and has been part of a government with questionable spending on teachers dinners when local children were going to bed hungry.

Under Walwyn’s watch, the education Ministry also wasted money on some areas of festivals (2012-2018), even when there were no pay raises for teachers and when public school teachers all over the Territory had to take money from their pockets to purchase teaching aids.

This was even before hurricanes Irma, which resulted in a financial crunch.

$1.6M ESHS Wall scandal

The biggest scandal under Walwyn’s watch was at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) wall, which cost taxpayers some $1.6M. The wall project was said to have broken financial laws and lacked value for money, according to a report by Auditor General, Ms Sonia M. Webster.

During the 2019 election season, Mr Walwyn was accused of running one of the most divisive political campaigns in the history of VI politics; allegedly putting locals against foreigners, locals against locals and even attacking close diplomatic neighbours like the United States Virgin Islands (USVI).

Also blamed for destroying the National Democratic Party (NDP), Walwyn is now reportedly seeking to make a comeback into politics.

With Premier Andrew A. Fahie (R1) out of the territory and the Acting Premier and Education Minister Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) coming under attack from elements seeking to be disruptive, it seems Mr Walwyn smelled blood in the water and, like a vicious hungry shark, has launched an attack.

Critics of Walwyn have said; however, they will never forget his "dark time in politics" and would never wish to see the territory return to those days.

I was always taught " It's easier to destroy than to build" I have my doubts that Walwyn/Penn would've navigated this much or any better with the COVID, COI & RDA. Them & Mark should stay quiet bc they've been the ministers for how long? Now there is political opportunity to pile on and gain public support bc we don't remember your gov was there for a decade, then 1 hurricane and everything went to hell. There's lots wrong in this place we need to focus on getting back on track than trying to rule over ruins. Let's get this country back to where we were first then fight over the seats after.

the young man need to just sit down but he have all rights to speak his mind but any conversation from him should update this territory as to why people tax money spent yet the wall by that school not completed: the hurricane destroyed the school in 2017 and under his custody our children got nothing: it is so amazing that while myron; marlon and mitch were the ruling administration they did nothing to benefit BVI people BUT now the 3 blind mice out of office have all the clues and answers.

Right now I don’t care about his million dollar wall scandal. I know those kids would of been in school learning face to face. Having virtual classes will make some of these kids clueless. They can be on their phones, cheating on exams to learn nothing strupes

It seems as if many people have shallow memory and do not reflect on Myron past in the territory's politics. He maneuvered his way to become the leader of the NDP.. He lied in the HOA that the people gave him approval for students to spend an extra year in secondary schools. Now that he is not there the students are graduating with excellent grades and obtaining CXC subjects to further their education at universities. The voters of this territory must not allow him to have another seat in the HOA again.

Could have at least used the wall building project as an opportunity to teach masonry skills. On the second thoughts, maybe not. Looks a bid shoddy.
