ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands Alzheimer's Association will host a 'Walk Against Dementia' on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Noel Lloyd Park, to raise awareness, promote understanding, and support those affected by dementia.

September is internationally recognised as World Alzheimer’s Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness, challenging stigma, and promoting a greater understanding of dementia.

'Ask About Dementia'

This year’s theme, “Ask About Dementia,” encourages open dialogue and the sharing of knowledge to help foster informed communities that provide better support and care for individuals and families affected by dementia.

Virgin Islanders are being encouraged to strengthen awareness, compassion, and action in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

According to a Facebook post by the VI Alzheimer's Association, this September, in honour of World Alzheimer's Month, the Rotary and Lions Clubs collaborated with the VIAA on Saturday, August 30, 2025, to beautifully decorate De Castro Street.

This special partnership was aimed to shine a light on dementia awareness and break down the stigma associated with this condition within the Virgin Islands community.

Dementia and Alzheimer are horrific, taxing, painful, energy sapping, etc., ailments , which are increasing, increasingly afflicting younger and younger VI residents, etc. Several decades ago, it seemed that mostly elderly residents suffered from serious memory issues. Today, the increasing number of cases may signify that a change(s) is occurring, contributing, and exacting a high burden, cost, etc, on families, along with the whole VI community. The afflictions appear to be non-discriminating and no family may be immuned or exempted.

Consequently, the ailments affect the whole VI community and requires the collective effort of the whole community.

Moreover, Government must invest in and launch a comprehensive territorial study into the cause(s) of the explosion of dementia and Alzheimer cases.A moon shot effort is needed.

@ E. Leonard, schoolmate, good read. Indeed, the BVI should be alarmed with and about increasing number of dementia and Alzheimer cases in a tiny population. In computer troubleshooting one looks to what change, if anything. What is the likely change, the most probable cause of the increasing number of cases, etc., as a start. Another troubleshooting technique in computer/electronic is tracing the point to where a signal is lost. When was dementia cases relatively stable in the BVI? What change since that time?
