Wade Smith's leave deferred
Speaking at a press conference held at the Central Administrative Complex Premier Smith declared that effective today taxes levied at the ports of entry will now be levied only on freight on port costs as opposed to what is currently done on cost, insurance and freight.
Premier Smith told members of the media that Smith’s leave, which was to take effect on February 6, 2012 for some 200 days, is not convenient in light of the new initiative.
“I have therefore asked that his requirement for leave be deferred to a more suitable and mutually agreeable time frame to allow the work of the department to proceed unimpeded,” he disclosed.
When questioned if he was aware that Smith was to be sent on leave, was going on leave, why it wasn’t handled differently and if he was pleased with how it was handled, the Premier responded: “The situation was being handled but it was pre-empted by information being given out, leaked out and so this pre-empted the process which was being instituted by informing myself and the officer.”
He also stated that he was unaware that Smith was to be sent on leave up until that time.
As reported on January 31, 2012, Smith was given a hand delivered letter, which he was asked to sign for, informing him of the decision. The letter was from his immediate supervisor, Financial Secretary, Neil Smith, directing that he proceed on leave from the end of this week.
Smith told close allies that he was disturbed by the unprofessional manner in which this matter was handled, as he does not usually listen to the streets, but learnt about his pending leave from there.
