VALLEY, Virgin Gorda, VI- Honourable Vincent O. Wheatley, District 9 Representative, has partnered with the Valley Sounds Lions Club to prepare and deliver almost 100 care packages to vulnerable members of the community as part of hurricane preparedness initiatives.

“Each package included dry and canned goods along with water to help families be better prepared. Seeing the smiles and gratitude on people's faces was truly heartwarming,” Hon Wheatley, who also serves as Minister for Health and Social Development, said.

Hon Wheatley also encouraged everyone who can to make their own hurricane preparations now.

The 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season began on June 1, 2026, and, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) prediction, this season is expected to have 8 to 14 named storms, 3 to 6 hurricanes, and 1 to 3 major hurricanes across the Atlantic basin.

Know someone in need, get in touch

Hon Wheatley also encouraged those who know of someone vulnerable, who may have been missed, to contact him at 468-9418.

He thanked the Valley Sounds Lions Club, volunteers and Mr Franklin Walters for making this initiative possible. “Together, we continue to take care of our community,” Hon Wheatley said.

Understand this year the weather is going to be unstable and unpredictable. Prepare as much as you can folks. Please store your valuable documents in sealed zip lock bags to prevent water damage in the event of floods or water damage.

I am not looking at who is giving out what, I am looking at preparing myself for this unpredictable weather. Better safe than sorry. I got some twenty gallon zip lock bags and put all my important documents in those bags to prevent them from any type of water damage. Put them in a backpack with a few personal items, sit the backpack somewhere where you can grab it in the event of an emergency and get to safety. Documents is the hardest things to replace.
