VISNA launches trusted family healthcare
The Trusted Family Healthcare Provider series is designed to help residents understand the value of maintaining an ongoing relationship with a primary healthcare provider who can monitor their health, coordinate care, and detect medical concerns early.
VISNA President Dr. Suzette Lettsome said “Having a trusted family healthcare provider can make a life-saving difference. When patients have consistent medical care, health concerns are identified earlier, treatment is more effective, and individuals feel more confident navigating their healthcare journey.”
Through this education series, the community can expect practical guidance on:
• The role of a trusted healthcare provider in preventive care
• How regular check-ups help detect health issues early
• Managing chronic conditions through continuous care
• Why medical history and continuity matter
• How a trusted provider improves communication and outcomes
The initiative will be delivered through educational flyers, video segments and social media outreach, ensuring accessible information reaches families across the Territory.
VISNA emphasizes that relying solely on emergency care can lead to delayed diagnoses and fragmented treatment. Establishing care with a trusted care provider allows patients to receive personalized, preventive care tailored to their individual needs.
“A trusted healthcare provider becomes familiar with your history, your risks, and your goals,” Dr. Lettsome added. “This relationship helps prevent complications, reduces medical emergencies, and strengthens overall health and well-being.”
The series also encourages parents to establish care early for their children and supports older adults in maintaining regular medical supervision to preserve independence and quality of life.
The Trusted Healthcare Provider series is part of VISNA’s broader Teaching Moments initiative, which focuses on empowering residents with clear, reliable health information to promote prevention and patient empowerment.
“As nurses, we are committed to helping individuals take control of their health, Dr. Lettsome said. This initiative reinforces the importance of prevention, partnership, and proactive care.”
