CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI —The Virgin Islands State Nurses Association (VISNA) has launched the latest installment of its Teaching Moments with VISNA’s President initiative, focusing on Patient Empowerment.

The series is designed to help residents become more informed, confident, and active participants in their healthcare.

The Patient Empowerment Series encourages individuals to understand their rights, ask questions, communicate openly with healthcare providers, and take greater ownership of their health decisions.

“Patient empowerment is one of the most important components of quality healthcare,” VISNA President Dr. Suzette Lettsome said. “When patients understand their health, ask questions, and advocate for themselves, they improve their outcomes and strengthen the entire healthcare system.”

Through this initiative, VISNA will provide practical guidance on:
• How to prepare for medical appointments
• The importance of asking questions and understanding diagnoses
• Knowing your medications and treatment plans
• How to speak up when something does not feel right

VISNA emphasises that healthcare works best when patients and providers work together. “Empowered patients are not difficult patients; they are informed partners,” Dr. Lettsome added. “When individuals are confident and engaged, they make better decisions, follow treatment plans more effectively, and reduce preventable complications.”

The initiative also supports VISNA’s broader mission to improve patient care, strengthen communication, and build trust within the healthcare system.

The Patient Empowerment Series is designed not only for individuals but also for caregivers and families who play a vital role in supporting loved ones.

“Our goal is to give people the tools to protect themselves and their families,” Dr. Lettsome stated. “Knowledge reduces fear. Information builds confidence. Empowered patients help create stronger, healthier communities.”

VISNA, we are not waiting for change; we are leading it!
