CHARLOTTE AMALIE, St Thomas, USVI- The [US] Virgin Islands State Nurses Association (VISNA), the official affiliate of the American Nurses Association, says it can now "smile" after hosting a uniting, inspiring and empowering convention under the theme 'The Power of Nurses' from October 22-24, 2025.

The Power of Nurses Convention brought together nurses, students, health professionals, and community partners for three days of inspiration, collaboration, and professional development.

The convention spotlighted the vital contributions of nurses in shaping the health of the US Virgin Islands and reaffirmed VISNA’s mission to advocate for the profession while uplifting the wider community.

'Transformative'

VISNA President Dr Suzette Lettsome, in a press release, said: “This convention has been nothing short of transformative. Our nurses, students and partners came together in a spirit of unity and left inspired to lead with greater strength. The conversations we shared lit a fire of purpose and reminded us that the future of healthcare in the Virgin Islands is bright and within our grasp. VISNA is proud to have created a space that uplifted our profession and set the stage for lasting impact in our community.”

Convention highlights included:

  • Keynote addresses that explored innovation, leadership, and the evolving role of nurses in public health.
  • Workshops on professional growth, mental health, and clinical excellence tailored to the realities of nursing in the Territory.
  • Opportunities for networking and mentorship that bridged generations of Virgin Islands nurses.
  • A renewed commitment to advancing health education and advocacy throughout the community.

The 'true power of nurses'

Dr Lettsome also praised the success of the convention and the dedication of the association’s members.

"This gathering showed us the true power of nurses, our ability to unite, inspire, and drive meaningful change in our community. The energy, vision, and passion that came out of this convention will guide us as we continue building a stronger, more visible VISNA brand for the Virgin Islands and beyond,” she said.

VISNA said it plans to build on the momentum of the convention by expanding its outreach programmes, increasing professional development opportunities, and deepening partnerships across the healthcare sector and the wider community.
