Her Volleyball career started at the tender age of 12 when her parents, Clyde and Isis Potter brought her to Jackie Weeks, Founder of the Matrix Volleyball Organisation, with the plea to get her away from just playing games on TV. Weekes took her under her wing and immediately recognized a raw talent.
Weekes worked with her and several other girls at the High School, eventually forming a team called “Chix for Trix. With the addition of Patti Romney, the team went onto win a championship and two of the girls; Selkridge and Valissa Brathwaite were offered scholarships.
As well as listening and learning from Weekes as the Territory’s top Volleyball Coach, Patrick Harrigan also recognized the talent of Selkridge and got the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports to assist in sending both Selkridge and Weekes to a camp in Michigan to further develop her skills.
The rest is down to hard work.
History is still in the making for Selkridge, but if nothing else, she is already proving that local coaches like Jackie Weekes have a lot to offer when given the right support and that if you have determination, willing to listen and to learn, then Volleyball can provide a great pathway to college success and a bright sporting future.
