VI's stalwart boatmen honoured @ Car & Bike Exhibition
The occasion was the 2019 Quality Promotions Car & Bike Exhibition at Festival Grounds on Saturday, April 20, 2019, organised by Ramoamasagana Pemberton aka ‘Masa’ and Dwayne Davis aka 'Badge'.
The first generation of boatmen honoured were Smith, George, Teddy Nibbs, Mark Simmonds, Clarence Thomas, Michael Thomas, Greg Forbes, Lisbert Wheatley aka 'Lisby’, Lauren George aka 'Pipe', Franciso Mulan aka 'Miller', Christian M. Cottoy and Hewlett Forde.
In 1986, the late Captain Smith founded Smith’s Ferry Service, which provides modern sea travel between the greater Virgin Islands (VI). Smith’s Ferry Service, was also another pioneer with inter islands sea transportation between Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Anegada. Mr Smith died on April 5, 2018.
Meanwhile, Mr George founded Speedy's Ferry Service. He was a patriot and humanitarian and transported many sick and deceased Virgin Gordians over the many years—most often free of cost—to Tortola for medical attention. As a pioneer in the sea transportation industry, he strived and it was always his goal, to make travel between Virgin Gorda, Tortola, Anegada, and the United States Virgin Islands (USVI) more convenient, comfortable and affordable.
Mr George died on March 28, 2018.
Car & Bike owners honoured
Rather than using the occasion as a competition, the organisers decided on showing appreciation to the people who contributed to car and bike shows over the years.
Among the car owners honoured were Vincent Whattley aka ‘Egga’, Brian Fonseca and Al Normon.
All of the honourees were presented with plaques.
