Panama City, Panama – The Virgin Islands (VI) Robotics Team has gained recognition as it continues to rise in the rankings, now positioned 30th out of 181 teams in the 2025 First Global Challenge, taking place in Panama City from October 29 to November 1.

Five selected to represent VI

This year's team consists of Eleazar Brooks, Keyara Smith, Jayron Gibson, Judiah Case, and Denae Scatliffe-Chalwell.

In 2024, the team steadily climbed the global rankings, moving from 143rd out of 191 to 111th out of 180 teams worldwide. This year, the team advanced closer to the top 10.

Teamwork, determination & passion

According to a Facebook post, this achievement reflects the “teamwork, determination, and passion” that the students have dedicated to every match so far.

The team will compete again today for a top spot in Ranking Match 307 at 10:50 a.m. (AST).

The robotics program evolved

The robotics program in the Virgin Islands has evolved into a structured component of the national curriculum. Students are introduced to robotics and chess through S.T.E.A.M. Innovations in Grade 7, with opportunities to continue in Grades 8 and 9, and advance to Robotics and Coding in Grades 10 and 11 to further develop their technical and problem-solving skills.

Attempts to get a comment from the Minister for Education, Youth Affairs, and Sports, Hon. Sharie B. de Castro (AL), were unsuccessful.
