ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI– Opposition Leader Hon Ronnie W. Skelton (AL) has called for more resources, including manpower, to be allocated to His Majesty's Loyal Opposition, which he said is an important organ for nation-building.

“If the Government intends to build a nation… then all the organs of a nation needs to be developed. I sat here in this House in April when we were sworn in. I gave the premier a letter requesting resources for the Opposition, so we can get the resources to basically do our job better than we can do it,” he said.

The Opposition Leader was at the time during the Sixth Sitting of the First Session of the Fifth House of Assembly during the budget debate of December 19, 2023.

Hon Skelton said even the Jr Ministers have consultants and yet the Opposition Members have nothing, “we don’t have the resources to do anything,” he added.

'Organs' have to be built - Hon Skelton

“So, Madam Speaker, it's important if we are going to talk about nation building… then we have to build the organs, we have to develop the institutions, we can’t just give them lip service.”

Hon Skelton reminded that without a parliament the VI would not go anywhere and in fact would just have a Governor.

“I don't think that's what any of us wants, based on 73 plus years since our forefathers gave us the ability to be here to look after the needs and wants of our people...

“So give us the resources, We're not asking for much….. Everybody has a consultant, We have nothing, and sometimes you need people to do in-depth research for you, so that’s what we are looking for, Madam Speaker,” Hon Skelton stated.

Democracy, though not being practice worldwide according to its original purpose still is in need of a closer economics, social and community-minded cooperation in the political sphere among all the governing body in order to serve the many needs of the people of the BVI.
Thousands of us are citizens of this Country,, one of a number of Overseas Territory of the UK. Democracy is of European origin, Greece.
After more than twenty-six hundred years since it was started, the twisted malpractices continue as normal.
Can the governing team and the opposition team on all the needed issues? Yes the can, if they want to. Will they both cooperate for the betterment of the people of the BVI ? No, they won't, but that doesn't means that the opposition should not be given more finances to properly carry out it's duties, as does the governing team.

The Hon Ronnie Skelton, At Large, must detail what he means by Opposition does not have the resources to do what it needs to do. Yes, in the WestMinister system , there is a Parliament , Government, and Opposition. The Parliament consists of all elected members who passed laws, regulations, policies, etc. Government consists of a majority of elected members and is responsible for executing the policies passed by Parliament/House of Assembly,,etc, ie, education policies, health policies, economic policies, physical infrastructure polices , social infrastructure policies,, security, etc. The opposition consists of all other elected members who are not part of government. There is only one government at a time, despite Opposition believing their policies policies are the ones which should be in place. The current opposition had a golden opportunity after the April 24 2023 General Election. Nevertheless, disunity, selfishness, poor prior planning and understanding, failure to compromise, etc saw that opportunity vanished faster than it fly in. They failed to realize that a bird in the hand is worth 17 in the bush. There can only one official Premier at a time, but every Tom, Jane, and Joe among the 7 opposition wanted to be Premier. However, while none of tmen were unwilling to compromise, squabbling, sleeping on it, etc. the sole woman among the 7 opposition members used her leverage, striking while the iron was hot to cut a deal with the current government . The current opposition may called it traitorous, Delilahish or whatever but they fail to realized each of us work in our own interests. Deal done, stop crying over spoiled milk, last missed opportunity to be Premier; it is time to move on with the people’s business. What does Hon Skelton want?

Does he want fully staffed and equipped central office spaces, district offices, consultants to do research on pending bills, local and international travel budget, government funded transportation, dictating how government execute policies, etc. There is one government at a time. You missed, squandered the opportunity to form the government. Time to get over the epic mistake and historic fumbling, lesson for the ages, missed opportunity.

Being completely honest, yes there is a need for more money for the 3 party opposition to do some aspects of their work, however, the lack of a reliable opposition system in the bvi house of assembly is disproportionately to blame.
