The announcement was made by Minister for Health and Social Development, Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9) in a statement on Monday, August 31, 2026. 

Mrs Smith was 107-year-old and Hon Wheatley said she lived an extraordinary life and was a remarkable member of the VI community. 

“Her 107 years represented a lifetime of experiences, wisdom and memories, and she stood as a cherished connection to generations past.”

He added that visiting her during the annual centenarian celebrations and on her birthdays were always special to him. 

“I truly enjoyed spending time with her, celebrating the remarkable milestones of her life and sharing in the warmth and joy that surrounded her.”

Hon Wheatley said Mrs Smith held a special place in the hearts of many, and her passing is not only a tremendous loss to her family and loved ones, but also to the wider Virgin Islands community. 

“Her life was one to be celebrated, and her legacy will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. On behalf of the Government of the Virgin Islands and the Ministry of Health and Social Development, I extend heartfelt condolences to Mrs Smith's family, friends and all those whose lives she touched.”

While the VI mourns her passing, he also reminded everyone that her life should be celebrated with gratitude for the 107 years she was able to live. 

“May her soul rest in eternal peace.”
