ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Radio talkshow host Claude O. Skelton-Cline has called 'unacceptable' the reserved powers of the Queen as laid out in the Virgin Islands Constitution Order 2007 to make laws for peace and order in the territory.

Section 119 of the Constitution says there is reserved to Her Majesty full power to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the Virgin Islands. This, according to Mr Skelton-Cline, is unacceptable in 2021.

“Our fate is in the hands, still remains in the hands of her Majesty, the Representative of the UK. Our fate and our destiny ultimately, according to our very constitution, lies in the hands of the people of the United Kingdom, that is unacceptable,” he said.

UK still has power over VI after slavery - Skelton-Cline

Skelton-Cline said the ancestors of those who enslaved the ancestors of Virgin Islanders still have the power of the territory, and that should not be the case. "How could it be in this 21st century, in 2021, how could it be that we are conformable, that we see nothing wrongs with that continuing to be the case?” he questioned.

He said that no people of the earth should be subject or slaves of another, “It is fundamentally wrong, it is morally wrong and obscene to be the subjects, to be subordinate,” to others he said.

Skelton-Cline said the UK in theory has recognised that subjugation is wrong; however, their behaviour has not changed over 300 years.

The commentator called on Virgin Islanders to recognise that locals have been taking care of the Virgin Islands and themselves for years.

He also called on Government, the Opposition, religious leaders, business leaders, and everyone with influence to come together and fight for justice, freedom, and independence on behalf of the people of the territory.

but it is due to the lack of good governance that the COI was called for , everyone including the guy mouthing off has called for it on the airwaves because of dodgy deals and back handers, now he is in the firing line he wants to call foul. This COI will help clear any problems and set up the BVI for independence in the next decade, if they wish it.

the time we have wasted running down to government house and complaining to the governor over our political differences of opinion should have been time spent reasoning with one another. until the territory separates independently from the United Kingdom we will always be subservient to her terms and conditions. this territory always enjoy a harmonious relationship with the United Kingdom no suddenly it's a big issue with some of us

@ land lord I beg too differ there has never been a harmonious relationship with the UK but one of deference to them of "Don't Rock The Boat" " Go along to get along" mentality. Low self esteem and mistrust and distrust of our leaders have made many of us fear independence. We also fear assimilation because in the larger hierarchy we will sink to the bottom ,except but with no voice. We're too lazy to research association and what it could mean for us. Last but not lease we wont even think of or entertain any other possibilities like we don't have the ability to think and must be spoon fed all of our options.

yes that is true but, when you look at the history of our neighboring Islands we should be cautious. when one thinks that there is no one to look over or at them they play and smell the cheese and the cookies and then remining then touch and mess with what they shouldn't have messed with. Then the country begins to owe, spend what they cant for foolishness, and selfishness starts to reign that is when the country goes down economically. That is the story of some of the Caribbean countries who gained their Independence from England. Though they have more in revenue and in country to sell and give. still they are in want of bad leadership that no one looks over and at. Sad but that is how it goes. Just imagine of what's going on though the eyes of the throne is around, imagine when the eyes are no longer. All I can say right now is God Bless The BRITISH Virgin Islands. I pray that what we are going through right now that the Almighty See Us Through Pleasantly.

        land lord!!!
nothing personal but depending on where you were born and when you were born contributes to your perspective: following the days after the slave trade our people moved these islands forward you might recall these islands were to become a bird sanctuary however our forefathers rose to the occasion: as a people from the mid 70s our people overcame begin remove from grant in aid for the united kingdom and our fathers press along. this territory became the breadbasket of the virgin islands send ground provision across to the USVI. we shifted goates spent long days at sea fishing:

simply saying after overcoming all of those hardships see where we are today, our ancestors rolling over in their gave

the first governor came here in 1972 and the most we saw the governors was at the queen parade were the Gov will dress in his all white NOW that have changed because of confrontation

        keep the faith josiah bay
how we and them going work this out

        British Virgin Islands
        1955-2021....

I'm a senor citizen and grew up for the greater part of my life in New York. I've been back now for twenty years. What I'm saying is some people across the globe would die for freedom no matter the form and we have had the blessing of (UN) international community for self determination and have done nothing towards that goal. If we are enamored with the UK we should simple assimilate into them. Poor leadership is on us and lack of preparation is on us We've had many chances to elect good leaders but fail to do so time and time again. If the people have no desire a goal to pursue that goal for self determination we will wonder aimlessly and could end up anywhere. You're correct the ancestors are rolling over in there grave to see what have become of their descendants who have lost the fire and the will that they exhibited.

If your are not happy living in a UK Overseas Territory then move to St. Kitts & Nevis, Antigua & Barbuda, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada or the Bahamas. These independent countries were all UK colonies 50 years ago and prosper today.

A CHOICE BETWEEN CSC OPINIONS AND THOSE THAT HE REPRESENTS AND THE CoI PROBES INTO CONTINUING CORRUPT DISFAVORING PRACTICES IN THE B.V.I SHOULD NOT BE A HARD CHOICE, BUT SOME WILL HAVE YOU TO BELIEVE IT IS. SUPPORT AND COOPERATE WITH THE CoI. OUR SPIRITUAL, SOCIAL, PHYSICAL, AND FINANCIAL IS AT STAKE. THROUGH MEANINGFUL AND UNBIAS INVESTIGATIONS, THE SEVERE PAINS OF INJUSTICE WILL BE DECREASE. WISDON IS THE STRENGTH OF KNOWLEDGE, BUT WITHOUT KNOWLEDGE WISDOM HAS NO POWER. NOW IS THE TIME TO STAND UP WITH JUSTICE.
GOD'S LOVE AND HIS CONTINUING GRACEFUL BLESSINGS TO ALL PEOPLE OF THE BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS.

Besides, what does the BVI export to be substantial to the Territory?

... It could be argued that the BVI's largest current export is its people, or human capital. Not altogether different from Irish or Filipino emigration. Sadly, there are likely more Virgin Islanders and Belongers and their descendents outside the BVI than in. It remains to be seen whether this will translate into remittances and diasporic investment as with Ireland and the Philippines however, or whether there will be government incentives to encourage Virgin Islanders to repatriate and help create new industries.

the virgin islanders are second class in this place you do better outside especially when it come to wages: most persons residing here depends on the rate of exchange so wages is not so much an issue the US Dollar almost triple when sent to via money gram. if you are duly qualified it make no sense to return home to work for peanuts. others comes in on contracts are given big money while home boy paid grade is petty cash: as an example the former RDA Boss we all now what his monthly take home pay was and i submit to you the person not hold his post do not make a fraction
