VI’s DJ Gumption asks for “local recognition” as a DJ
Allington Creque also known as DJ Gumption from North Sound, Virgin Gorda, said through winning the competition, he wants to be recognised as someone not to be reckoned with, someone who is the best at what they do.
In an exclusive interview with Creque, he stated that with the public giving him the appreciation he rightfully deserves, he can then fulfill his destiny as a DJ.
He stated that he became a DJ so that an effort can be made to play songs of the local artists who are "passed over".“As a DJ my style of playing is to play for the unheard and the hardly played artists in the Virgin Islands.”
Creque stated that DJs around the Virgin Islands (VI) play the same music the same way, and he wanted to make a difference in the DJ business within the VI to play songs that the people don’t hear and songs that the people love, not what they expect to hear when going to a club or party.
He said by being a DJ, he is in full command to play whatever he wants to play without any problems.
He entered the competition because he saw a need for the local acts to be aired as much as possible.
“Going out, one or two of the local acts are played but only 1 or 2 of the songs.”
Persons entering the competition were required to produce a Mix Tape compiled with songs of all the artists who performed at this year’s Music Festival.
The competition that was launched by the committee of the 2012 BVI Music Festival, gave participants over three weeks to produce their CDs, ending on May 18.
Each participant had to submit their mix tapes to SoundCloud.com which had a direct link to Facebook. The fans were the judges in this competition where they voted for the best mix tape.
The mix tape with the most likes on Facebook won.
The DJ told this news site that he had no doubts about winning the competition because he is aware of his potential.
He stated that there were no challenges in producing the mix tape. He added that through research and YouTube’s help, he was able to produce a very successful CD.
By winning the competition, he was awarded a VIP pass to all three days of the Music Fest along with free recognition and promotion as a local DJ.
DJ Gumption thanked the Music Festival committee for the opportunity as well as the people who liked his mix tape and voted for him to win.
