ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI - Junior Minister for Tourism and Culture, Honourable Luce D. Hodge-Smith (R4), has defended the Virgin Islands delegation attending CARIFESTA XV, stating that this year's delegation is special.

Her remarks came during a press conference held on Monday, August 18, 2025, where the full delegation of 53 members was announced.

The Junior Minister emphasised that this year's delegation includes seasoned cultural practitioners who have been honing their craft for years, as well as new and emerging artists bringing fresh energy and perspectives.

"This balance between tradition and innovation ensures that our culture remains alive, dynamic, and relevant."

Immense dedication

The preparation process for this year's CARIFESTA delegation required immense dedication, with musicians rehearsing tirelessly, dancers perfecting their performances, and designers and visual artists creating works that reflect the Virgin Islands' identity.

Additionally, writers and filmmakers are preparing to share stories from the Virgin Islands with the world.

Hodge-Smith remarked, "Their commitment is not easy, but it is necessary and deeply appreciated."

The Junior Minister for Tourism also mentioned the youth delegation that will be participating in this year’s activities, stating, "Thirteen of our students, accompanied by three chaperones, will have the opportunity to participate. For them, this is more than just a trip; it is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn, connect with peers across the region, and witness firsthand how culture shapes their identity. We are proud of them and grateful to the parents, teachers, and supporters who made this possible."

Empowering artists

The Ministry has been tasked with coordinating, empowering, and supporting the delegation, ensuring that the logistical, financial, and organisational resources needed for success are available.

Hodge-Smith added, "Beyond simply facilitating travel and participation, our goal is to empower artists by creating spaces for them to develop their craft, gain exposure, and build networks that will benefit the Territory long after CARIFESTA ends."

She anticipates that this year's delegation will use this experience to learn from their peers, forge new partnerships, and bring back knowledge and experiences that will strengthen our cultural ecosystem at home, stating, "CARIFESTA is not just about showcasing who we are; it is about building bridges."

CARIFESTA XV, the Caribbean Festival of Arts, will take place in Barbados from Friday, August 22, to August 31, 2025, under the theme "Caribbean Roots, Global Excellence." The festival will feature over 2,500 delegates from the Caribbean region and various countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, and Colombia.

Is there a schedule to tell us when or where our people will be performing or appearing? When and where will the films be shown?

This was a last minute bone the government threw at Luce to make it seem like she doing something. Our children are pawns, they dont care about our children!! She needs to focus on cleaning up the capital right quick and fast before the sidewalk paint she put on for August Monday fades away. People still parking where ever they want, some businesses still acting like the sidewalk is theirs, some business and home owners need to be made to clean the external environs and make repairs to their buildings, etc. Not to mention the stench that greets your stomach in Town, especially right outside Tobacco Wharf. Get to work Luce, you cannot be re-elected because you took a few of our babies to CARIFESTA. What happens after that, do you have money to send them to college?
