ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI— With the aim of empowering retired civil servants to continue making meaningful contributions while enjoying their post-service years, the Virgin Islands Retired Public Officers Association (VIRPOA) has officially been formed.

An interim executive board, led by President Pete S. Smith, has been appointed to guide the Association during its formative stages.

‘Significant milestone’

A press release from VIRPOA described the establishment of the body as coming after years of anticipation and marking a significant milestone for retired public officers in the Territory.

“This newly established organisation aims to serve as a platform for advocacy, engagement, and inspiration for retirees, empowering them to continue making meaningful contributions while enjoying their post-service years,” the press release stated.

Board Members

Other members of the board include Vice President Violet J. de Castro, Secretary Brenda M. Lettsome-Tye, Treasurer Wendell M. Gaskin, Public Relations Officer Richard Courtney de Castro, Assistant Secretary Tacita L. Morgan, Assistant Treasurer Naomi E. Turnbull, Assistant Public Relations Officer Harriet Cameron and Sergeant of Arms Brendalee C. Jones.

The VIRPOA said it is dedicated to advocating for the rights and privileges of retirees, ensuring their earned benefits and entitlements are protected. Beyond advocacy, the Association seeks to foster a sense of community by organising meaningful activities and engagements for its members. Additionally, the VIRPOA aims to inspire retired public officers to embrace fulfilling and vibrant post-service lives, promoting well-being and continued personal growth.

Audience with Premier being sought

It said a letter has been submitted to the Honourable Premier, formally requesting an audience with the Caucus. This meeting, according to VIRPOA, will provide an opportunity for the interim executive to introduce the body, outline its objectives, and discuss key concerns affecting retired public officers.

"This is an exciting and transformative moment for retired public officers across the Virgin Islands," said Pete S. Smith, Interim President of VIRPOA. "We are hopeful that this Association will not only be a strong advocate for retirees but also a source of community, inspiration, and support as we navigate life beyond public service."

Retired public officers have been encouraged to join the VIRPOA and share their ideas as the organisation continues to grow.
