Virgin Islanders targeted for hospital employment

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – In an effort to make the medical field more attractive to Virgin Islanders, the BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) over the summer vacation, will create a rotation programme for high school students to get familiarised with all aspects of what the Peebles Hospital has to offer.

“...they will spend some time in the pharmacy, sometime in the Labs, in radiology, in the medical record [department] to get a feel of the different ancillary things that support the hospital services and give them some interest in those fields,” announced the Director of Hospital Services, Cedorene Patricia Malone-Smith at a press conference on June 14, 2012.

Furthermore, Mrs. Malone-Smith told journalists that the Authority is constantly hiring to ensure the smooth flow of the services offered but admitted, “we have new nurses coming in and we have nurses going”.

The good news is that five nurses from the Caribbean were hired recently, and seven more are expected to be on staff in September.

“As we do that, a couple of our old nurses have left so it’s always a work on the way which is of replacing who is leaving while trying to bring in and fill the slacks that we have. It’s not as good as I would like it to be.”

She added that the BVIHSA has begun to track down and work with Virgin Islanders who are overseas. “We have been doing a pretty good job of that we have five VIslander doctors that just came home and are on staff and we have nurses that are going to finish in the next year or so. We have people out studying and we are waiting for them to finish and to come back home for those kind of things, but for the other fields we have a little bit more of a challenge in terms of how do we get them in.”

I heard this woman only has a Bachelor's degree in Nursing and is not a specialised nurse. If this is the case it would be difficult to recurit persons to work under someone with such limited qualifications expecially doctors. If you have to compare the BVIHSA to other statutory bodies, the persons who are in senior management positions are the least qualified, and this organization impacts our lives in some shape or form. I believe the government needs to go back to the drawing board. The BAR needs to be raised............

Aint no jealous hate. This woman needs to sort out her BVI nursing registration so that she can be reassigned as a staff nurse which is what she is qualified for. The government needs to hire a real and professional manager for the hospital if they are serious.

since he knew that he needed a butcher, why he didn't send away one of his sons to be trained?....so my son should be a butcher while his son is an accountant/business manager?

This is not a new program. This has been in place from since the hospital was under the Ministry.

I hope that when they bring home the locals they would treat them good. So often we are treated as wild dogs on the street. Please for god sake to do not make them work under anyone that is not qualified to be their supervisor. It can cause a lot of issues and we often tend to lose people who can contribute to the development of the country.

Agreed. Like working under the unqualified director of hospital who should be a staff nurse on the obstetric ward.
