LAWRENCE COUNTY, Missouri, USA- A crash between a pedestrian and a tractor-trailer on I-44 on the morning of Friday 15, August 2025, left one person dead, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The deceased has since been identified as Virgin Islander Jamal Jones of Tortola and a long-time public officer. At the time, he was the Finance and Planning Officer at the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports.

According to OZARKS FIRST, a local TV Station in Springfield, Missouri, USA, just after 5:30 AM, on Friday, the Lawrence County authorities notified the Missouri State Highway Patrol about a crash on eastbound I-44 near Mt. Vernon at mile marker 48.

Fatal accident

It is alleged, according to the same TV Station, that an eastbound passenger car had hit a deer on the road. The vehicle stopped in the driving lane, and one of the passengers got out of the car to remove the deer from the roadway.

A tractor-trailer then saw the car and broke hard to try and avoid a collision, but ended up striking the pedestrian and the vehicle, according to the information from OZARKS FIRST TV Station. The tractor-trailer also overturned in the crash and landed on the south side of I-44.

A committed public officer

Mr Jones has over 30 years of service as a public officer and has also worked in the Premier’s Office before being reassigned to the Ministry of Education, Youth Affairs and Sports around  2021/22.

On Friday, staff at the Ministry were described as devastated, in shock and very sad over his sudden and untimely death. He was described as kind, jovial and always very helpful. The deceased is survived by his wife, parents and a brother, among many other relatives and friends.

The management and staff of Virgin Islands News Online (VINO) offer our heartfelt condolences to Mr. Jones' immediate family and other loved ones.
