PHILIPSBURG, St Maarten, DWI- In their second night out at the ‘Battle of the Fittest’ (BOTF) Basketball Tournament in Dutch St Maarten, basketball team Virgin Gorda Bayside Blazers racked up another win when they took on the United States of America (USA) team.

The games were played last evening Monday, July 15, 2024, at the LB Scott Sports Auditorium in Philipsburg, the capital city of Dutch St Maarten.

Off to a slow start, VG Bayside Blazers were behind some 8 points in the first 6 minutes of the game; however, the team got hot quickly and passed Team USA.

Top hitters for VG Bayside Blazers in game two against the USA were point guard Anthony J. Smith, Virgin Gorda’s own Shamarr A. George aka ‘Shumba’ and Raheem E. Carter.

Smith led with 18 points, George 17 and Carter 15 to help the Blazers with the win.

13 point-win

The final score was VG 73, USA 60.

The Virgin Islands has two teams in the St Maarten BOTF Tournament. Team Skillfull Ballers representing Tortola is coached by basketball veteran Ronald Simmons aka 'Gola'. 

Team Virgin Gorda Bayside Blazers is managed by Julian Willock and coached by Brian S. Brewley aka ‘Bash’. The Assistant coach is Derrick R. Varlack with Trevor M. Stevens aka ‘West’ as the team's Trainer.

VG Bayside Blazers vs hosts St Maarten tonight

Tonight, Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at 10:00 PM, VG Bayside Blazers will take on St Maarten which has the home team advantage.
