ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) says it's ready to contest upcoming General Elections, against the National Democratic Party (NDP) under its newly elected leadership.

This is according to Opposition Leader, Honourable Andrew A. Fahie (R1), in a congratulatory public statement to the outgoing and incoming NDP leaders.

According to the statement issued today, June 25, 2018, “the VIP will be more than ready for the next General elections.”

The VIP Chairman, disclosed that by mid July, the VIP Congress, “will be meeting to ratify most of the District Candidates and to introduce the prospective candidates for At-Large.”

The VIP Chairman, in his missive congratulating the new NDP leadership, singled out “...persons who were elected to the Executive Body of the NDP especially Hon Marlon A. Penn, as Vice President and Hon Myron V. Walwyn, as the new President/Leader of the NDP.”

He also took the opportunity to bid farewell to the outgoing NDP President, saying “I take this time to thank Dr the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, for his tenure as Leader/President of the NDP over the last 20 years.”

Leadership, he said, calls for major sacrifices and "from one leader to the next, it is only respectful to salute his consistency. “

Service Cannot be Overlooked

According to Hon Fahie, the two leaders, “differed many times in political philosophies and methodologies over the years, but his (Dr Smith) years of consistent service cannot be overlooked.”

The Opposition Leader in his statement also used the occasion to reiterate the need for transparency and accountability in the spending of state funds, saying “we must promote openness, transparency, accountability and good governance at all times in the carrying out of the people's hard earn tax dollars.”

PAC Public

In this regard, Hon Fahie said, he will be seeking to make the affairs of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), public.

“As Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee we will continue to attempt to secure a quorum in order to hold meetings so that the public can be clear how their tax dollars were spent… In addition, it is essential to have to the PAC meetings public so that the media and the public can attend and see firsthand how their tax dollars are being spent.”

Hon Fahie’s declaration came today, ahead of a scheduled PAC meeting for today, Monday, June 25, 2018.

If oncea month PAC is supposed to meet, and there are nothing substantial coming from them & this is constitutionally required; are there no penalties? Those members consistently that are a no-show should be named and shamed & fined for contravention of the constitution etc. They take this crucial oversight committee as a joke; let their constituents know which reps. are AWOL

I hope the VI party come with people who can take out this corrupt and inhumane government I say inhumane because if they know you are not with them they even do not say hello. There is a special district where people is suffering every time a gut runs and they turn their backs on the residents. They need to go home and put in another set and see if they can do better . We need people who cares for the residents of our little Island .

@wize up. There will be no snap election, trust me. They are waiting in that UK recovery money to see what all they can get done to try and fool people but I think the people of the BVI are more smarter. No quick fix will fool us this time.

@ mofford: I was just speculating and I agree with you(no snap elections) like you noted waiting on that money: a snap election with the territory in this poor state is not in their best political interest....they will seek to campaign after doing a few patches in an effort to trick some into votes(gone are the days when the politicians can fool us---they can still trick some of us) once money begins passing some tend to forget!!!!!
