ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – Chairman of Advance Marketing and Professional Services Mr Julian Willock said he is not about to “read the eulogy” on the Virgin Islands Party (VIP) of which he is a member and said the upcoming months will tell the fate of the party.

Mr Willock was speaking on the International Morning Ride Show with Paul ‘Gadiethz’ Peart heard on ZROD 103.7 FM today December 16, 2015.

Peart asked Willock whether the VIP was “dead” given the scathing loss at the June 8, 2015 elections, which saw the party holding on to only two seats.

“I wouldn’t be so quick to read the eulogy on the Virgin Islands Party,” he said.

“Particularly when that party is now spending it’s second term in the Opposition... There will be challenges... the question is whether the Virgin Islands Party is aware of what has to be done in order to fix the Virgin Islands Party. So some decisions will have to be made and the question is whether they have the balls, excuse the language... some people may say it’s sexist... whether they have the courage to make the tough decisions for the survival of the Virgin Islands Party,” he said.

Mr Willock, a former Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communications and Works and former Director of Water and Sewerage Department, had also put his name up for contesting the post of President of the VIP at their May 2014 Congress. He later withdrew his name, leaving the battle between eventual winner Carvin Malone and Joanne 'Roxie' Romney.

“But I wouldn’t read the eulogy quite yet. We would have to wait and see early January to know whether they have the courage to do what is necessary,” said Mr Willock.

Persons have been of the view that the VIP has been in a crisis and has been that way for the longest while, even predating the 2015 elections. Some members even blamed the Chairman of the Party Honourable Julian Fraser RA (R3) as the cause for the party’s retrogression and its poor showing at the last elections.

The real question to ask is not if VIP is dead but if the entire VI is dead because of the hole the NDP put us in with their ongoing escalating corruption locally & abroad that no one in authority wants to address.

I voted for NDP in this last elections with a heavy heart but if even quarter of the many rumors on the street of corruption that most of them are alleged to be involved in is true then I think we need to pick the best out of both sides & weed out the bad rotten apples & move on. What I am hearing about some of these NDP Ministers isn't good at all!

I am tired of taking that long treasury ramp walk and coming down empty handed. NDP policies just might bring VIP back to life.

Willock is a sensible guy and he and Frazer seems to have a good rapo. Tell Frazer nicely VIP only hope is if he relinquished leadership. I'm sure he would give your wisdom serious consideration. It can't be fahie. It has to be fresh blood with personality. Intellect and good character.. Carvin would be a good leader.

Frazer is a good man so sad that most of the people don't think well of him. Dr. Dawson is right man to lead a successful VIP. I also think Carvin can easily beat Archie and Ronnie at Large. Carvin and Dawson should take the bull by the horn..

VIP has a serious challenge. I can tell you about 9 of the candidates that competed in last election will not come back under the same leadership. So, there is no winning in something that appears to be unstable and ununified. Street reporter is back. My reporting was on par. Exactly what I reported happened. Be warned

Well it is a hot debate. I think the VIP is too fragmented. There is a very good possibility that the party can be a force to recon. However the candidates are too for themselves and not the party. It started with Vernon Malone and Andrew Fahie when they stood in the Legislative Council and embarrased the government. They do not understand what the party stands for and what the district stands for.
They must reflect the party and not the district. The elected members must stand strong and convince the members that the party is the body. The districts make up the party and not the other way.
Had the VIP focus their attention on the issues affecting the country and convince the electorates that they are NOT BETTER off under NDP, they would have made inroads. Instead the VIP tried to defend Fraser. Cut off the head and win the election.

VIP may be breathing but is alive through life system. VIP's demise can be attributed to many factors, i.e., poor succession planning, poor leadership, myopia, selfishness, lack of currency.........etc. If the VIP wants to be awaken from its slumber and weakened state and be relevant again, it needs to complete overhaul and restructuring with new leadership. As an election postmortem, the VIP should have done better rush election the election or not. The 11-2 shellacking occurred not because the NDP was that overwhelmingly strong but because the VIP was weak. The VIP was too weak to exploit the many weaknesses of the NDP. It was unprepared for the election. Its slate of candidates did not match up well vs the NDP. Clearly, a plurality of the electorate was not into the VIP leadership. The leadership was drag on some of the more competitive candidates . Sometimes to save a patient a doctor may have to amputate a limb so too must organization do to survive and thrive.
