ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI- The Government of Premier Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has launched its Registration Drive to extend employment, training, and education opportunities to unemployed persons in the Virgin Islands.

The drive is being conducted through its Registration Apprenticeship Training Employment and Development (RATED) Programme to provide temporary employment opportunities with a number of ministries and departments in the Public Service.

The initiative dubbed, “Coming to a District Near You,” will be held from January 22 to January 31 in every electoral district and will extend employment, training and education opportunities to Virgin Islanders and Belongers between the ages of 18 to 70 who are not employed or are employed part-time.

Premier Wheatley says he is pleased about the new drive launched under the programme. “I am pleased to see this new initiative, Coming to a District near You”.

More development under RATED

Premier Wheatley spoke about the future of the RATED programme and outlined plans to further develop the programme, thus extending more benefits for the people of the Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change, Mr Ronald F. Smith-Berkeley is inviting interested persons to make a special effort to attend and be registered, during the drive.

Opportunity and experience is great but not paying the ones that is already working over a month is disturbing and disturbing without an explanation. People don't work for free. Please don't discourage the youths any further. Pay them as promised based on the agreement. Once a month!

They just using the young people them to help clean up the back log they have in their offices . Say them giving them work for six months and is hell for the children them to get their money. Stop making them feel them getting work when after six months they home sitting like couch potato

I totally agree with you. These young people especially wake up early, to work for Government for free. It's very discouraging for them to know that they can't enjoy their money when they want to or who have the world of bills to pay and can't get them paid because they are not getting paid on time. GOVERNMENT YALL NEED TO DO BETTER!

Exactly. They want you to be on time and pay weeks to a month late. They give you a contract and you must follow it but they never fulfill their part on time. Pay at the end of the month its not a surprise!!!! If we are a contractor and not getting paid on time usually the contractor would sue due to lost wages & breach of contract.

This is what we train our people to tolerate.

These politrickans are so deceptive and these locals are so foolish they stop the majority of investors from opening business and expect jobs for the future, tell me what would happen if you spite outsiders while your own people have no interest in or cannot manage a business or even keep a job

Just give the program a chance. I have good feelings about the program. The young adults need this program. Just be fair to them and make it work and it will be fine.

Check them charter companies who refusing to hire locals and have a set of people working without permits. Locals are asked to submit resume and the others are just told to report to work next day. Lots of unemployed young boys looking for weekend works too and same problems the companies bringing in their own kind who already have a job.

This is a good initiative; however, I will not recommend it to anyone. I am employed under the rated program, and up to now I have not received my December payment. It will be discouraging for the youths, having us wait for a payment, you would swear it's a lot of money. If it were the government workers who weren't paid, you would hear all kinds of complaints, but because they got paid, they are laid back, and as one of the employers under the RATED Program stated, "your payment ISN'T a priority right now." What kind of comment is that. And this is a programme y'all are using to encourage youths. Government workers almost ready to get paid again, and I am struggling to receive little pocket change. I WANT MY MONEY!!!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND!! Y'ALL NEED TO DO BETTER!!!

How many times has this been tried before by various governments? Unfortunately our society and administration is such that nobody has any idea how many people are unemployed, unemployable, or want work, or are untrained or untrainable.

This programme seems to be rolled out every few years with zero follow up or momentum. Someone, please make sure it is continuously run as it should be a real benefit rather than a political football.

Just be fair, pay the youths on time for the work that they have done. Don’t have them working and they have to wait for weeks to get the money they worked for.

    @HMMM,

So very true! I have been saying the same thing for some time now and know exactly what you are talking about.

It appears that the "powers that be" prefer to turn a blind eye to the reality at hand.

The sad thing is that it is our own people (especially future generations) that would feel the effects.

The program is a very good initiative especially for young persons who are just being introduced to the working world and older persons who may need to make “ends” meet. However, as with all things it’s not perfect and I do appreciate that with most things they are growing pains. Since I have joined this program I have had difficulty each and every time receiving my payment. I have made several calls on all occasions and while some persons have been very helpful others have been very “ snobbish “ . I am a young person who is trying to be a good citizen to this little island I call home- sometimes I wonder if they do care about us . Some of the behaviors I have seen on the job by adults is rather appalling and they expect us do be better when the examples set is below bar. Thankfully my parents are still doing a good job in helping me to navigate this thing called adulthood ( idon’t like it lol).
Anyway, we are not being paid on time at all- to date we HAVE NOT received the rest of our payment for December ( they paid us half at Christmas time) I am grateful. However, the rest is no where to be found it seems like the grinch stole it. So all I am saying is please pay us on time. Geez man. I know some of you on here will say things like - they don’t have bills to pay etc but that’s not the point. Some of us can’t buy lunch or make lunch because we don’t have money to get to the supermarket. By the time I get my check the prices will go up again. LORDY HELP US OUT BUDDY.

"you would swear it's a lot of money."

By time people sit waiting for them to pay late when the check lands its gone because responsibility backed up. Thanks government people working in the hot sun getting up early spending more money on food. Even office workers on the RATED are asking for a couple dollars to get by. A days work sure but coming early again no way.
