BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI- The Virgin Islands Party (VIP) has responded to claims by Mrs Mitsy J. Ellis-Simpson that she might have been cheated while contesting for a Territorial At Large seat with the Party, during its 2023 nomination process, which was conducted at the R & R Malone Complex in Pockwood Pond on March 15, 2023.

During the process, Mrs Ellis-Simpson, who has now opted to enter the upcoming elections as an Independent Territorial At-Large Candidate, was unsuccessful at getting on the VIP slate after she was defeated by the Party’s then Vice-President Zoe J. Walcott, 42 votes to 15.

'Process was not fair & normal to myself'- Ellis-Simpson

However, during an interview on the show Talking Points, which was live-streamed on Facebook on March  27, 2023, Mrs Ellis-Simpson insinuated that the VIP’s nomination process was unfair as she detailed her experience which she said propelled her to run independently.

“I actually went through a process with another Party, the Virgin Islands Party, in going through their nomination process. And having completed that process and assessing everything that transpired, I thought it was necessary for me to come to the people and give them an opportunity to choose from a pool of candidates, not just Party candidates, but also independent candidates at this time,” Ellis-Simpson told the hosts of the show.

She added: "This is a situation where, in my opinion, when I went through the process, in my opinion, I felt like the process was not fair and normal to myself.”

Ellis-Simpson also insinuated that former VIP Member Hon Shereen D. Flax-Charles, who has since joined Progressive  Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM), may have been unfairly treated during the nomination process.

Ellis-Simpson had also sought unsuccessfully to contest with the VIP in 2019.

VIP has 'always maintained a high standard of integrity & fairness'- Press Release

In a press release, dated March 30, 2023, the VIP responded to Ellis-Simpson, noting the Party affirms that its recent congressional meeting, which included the election of its final At Large candidate, was conducted with the utmost professionalism and in adherence to the Party’s constitution.

“The VIP takes its obligations seriously and has always maintained a high standard of integrity and fairness in its processes. Recently, Mrs Mitsy Ellis-Simpson, a prospective candidate, raised concerns regarding the level of fairness in the VIP's election process during an interview on the Talking Points radio show. The VIP would like to clarify that after the conclusion of the congressional meeting, Mrs Ellis-Simpson did not express any dissatisfaction with the process. In fact, she congratulated her opponent and did not indicate any concerns to the executive body of the party,” the press release stated.

It continued by stating that the Party is committed to promoting good governance, unity, and strength in preparation for the upcoming 2023 general elections and maintains its dedication to conducting all its affairs transparently and in accordance with its constitution.

"We wish Mrs Ellis-Simpson the best of luck in her independent candidacy," VIP President Sharia B. de Castro noted, while adding that the Party remains committed to working towards a brighter future for the Virgin Islands and moving forward together.

The only way this nobody can get airtime is to say something stupid. Her ‘skills’ meant that she was not the best candidate and the VIP rejected her. I suspect that she treats every rejection as unfair - because somebody with her ‘skills’ should surely never be rejected.

This is just Misty's way of getting some publicity otherwise she is dead on arrival. Her character and personality are not befitting of a representative.

It is difficult to imagine a person less suited to being a member of the HoA - no interest in anybody but herself, and believes that bullying is the way to get what she wants. It is not surprising that none of the parties wanted her - even those that do not have a full slate of candidates - and that she is having to stand on her own.

I agree that whoever she is, she is just trying to generate some publicity for herself. She may get less votes in the election that she got at the VIP meeting.

If as a wannabe leader, you dont understand the dynamics of why you will never be elected, that is a sad commentary of your ambitions. Let me tell you, you trying to force the "yard" down people throat.

Mitsy is claiming that she was treated unfairly but she is not saying how. She wants us to just take her word for it. No. Tell how. Was the voting rigged ? Was there open bias against you? Did she special and entitled to win? I did not win so the 42-15 was rigged? Do you feel that you are the one the BVI was waiting for? Take a seat. Go siddung!

If she was successful at the outcome of the process would she still think that it is unfair?
    • @Laslow (31/03/2023, 13:04) Like (5) Dislike (0) Reply
@Laslow, no, she would not. The process is unfair and rigged if I lost but is cool because I win. That is some Donald Trump logic and strategy. Some of us are so self absorb and we feel bigger than life and we are the straw that stirs the drink and likes the reflection in the many mirrors.

What persons consider unfair will differ. But with proper information, processes and adherence to principles of integrity, actual unfairness can be minimized. Now let's address matters that will help the people of the BVI. Mitsy don't get side tracked, you have some good ideas and I have observed your implementation skills. Good luck!

Nothing involved humans judgement and assessment of another was never fair, and will never be fair, the imperfect human will always have biases, preferences and self interest..So I a people say they are being fair that within itself is an unfair statement, or a lie...Some people accept the bias and unfairness some stand up and when those with courage stand up, they get knocked down

I dont really know this young lady ,but we do need to listen to what she is saying.
Dont throw her out like an abortion.
I remember back in the days when The former Premier and Hon Frazer were contesting the leadership of the said party, The president/chairman whichever Carvin Malone went around with Fahie campaigning against frazer. How bold faced. Im sure that s why he was treated that way by the new kid on the block.
You were treated the same way you are. Whatever goes around comes around ,but we never ever know how soon it would.
