GREENLAND, Tortola, VI - Vincy C.C. recorded their second thumping victory over the Vikings by 4 wickets and with seven overs to spare on Sunday June 16, 2013 as the second round of the Digicel Twenty/20 Cricket Championship continued at Greenland's playing field.

The Vincy are a much more disciplined and organized team this season under new management and with the support of the St Vincent organisation. They also look a real threat to the Cavaliers' attempt to secure yet another championship.

However, they still do show some of the old tendencies to implode under pressure as was borne out when chasing the relatively low Vikings total of 122. They lost some late wickets through rash shots even though victory was in sight.

The Vincy cricketers won the toss and had little hesitation in asking the Vikings to bat first, despite the form guide suggesting teams batting first usually win. It was surely a reflection on the confidence that captain Dennisford Brown has in his bowlers to contain teams before unleashing his batting force to chase down any target they face.

That confidence might have proven misplaced as the Vikings opening pair of Lilchand Mangal and Richard Fredericks set about the bowling by smashing 20 from the first over.

Brent Defreitas bowled the third over and proved a little too hot to handle, but the 4th over from Xavier Turby saw Fredericks hit three consecutive boundaries and Mangal one as the Vikings reached 50 without loss.

Defreitas bowled a tidy second over on his way to conceding just 21 runs from a total of three and then in the 6th over a change of bat by Fredericks seemingly upset his judgment as he called Mangal through for a suicidal run and found himself short at the bowlers end, run out for 25.

55-1 quickly became 60-2 as Defreitas produced a gem of a lifting delivery to have Mangal caught at wide slip by Austin McDowell for 23 and then Kevin Walker survived a diving catch from Zico at backward point before he had scored to end the over.

Murray Ollivierre came back into the attack and although hit for a six and a four by Walker he kept his cool to have the same batsman caught off a top edge by Defreitas for 13. Maxford Pipe was also bowling superbly and brought to an end an entertaining knock by Dave Pyroo.

      It's about time!
You know when race day comes, coverage is there. When basketball season running locally, you see things in the news- just chill and let every sport and athlete get his/her dues and props.

@Yepp. Who fooled you that the BVI has indiginous sports called "horse racing" and "basketball"? I think that you need to talk to an elderly BVIslander. I'm sure that they will tell you that cricket was the #1 sport in the BVI, and that the BVI had a formidable team that used to go to St. Kitts and Antigua on Mr. Carlton DeCastro's boat to play competitive cricket. Basketball came in the last shower of rain. And by the way, there used to be many one-horse races (horse against the clock).

Since when basketball indigenous to the BVI? Horse racing has been around a long time, so has cricket! Some people choose to not acknowledge the facts- clearly you are one!
Talk to the politicians and older people in the villages and sister islands in the BVI and you will know about cricket. Yes I mean locals who are born here too. The education system has failed in carrying on this noble sport because of our attempts to be Americanized hence they teach basketball, volleyball, and softball. Whether you or others want to accept it, we are part of the Caribbean and UK.
You are clearly a young person who only knows two sports- basketball and horse racing. Horse racing only now picking up in the BVI. Bottom line- know your history before you make uninformed comments.
FYI Definition of indigenous - "Originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native"- the sports you mentioned do not fit. Try again.

Coming up to finials ,the BVICA should choose wisely the person to invite. We don't want them to DIG UP THE FIELD like they did when they withness the last finials between Cavaliers and Vincy , some three years back.ONE WEEK just after the finials and leave the field for three years undone.
