Vincy C.C. are the new Kings of Cricket!
His huge hit not only gave his team victory but also brought up a personal half century and Butler was later named Man of the Match for steering the new champions over the finish line after coming to the crease with the game delicately balanced.
His unbeaten 52 included five fours and four maximums and began with the Vincy on 88 for 3 in the 12th over chasing 166 for victory.
Joined by Brent Defreitas almost immediately following Dennisford Browne’s demise, LBW to Vishal Bharat, the pair compiled an ultimately match winning partnership of 48 runs.
The Cavaliers battled away though and restricted the Vincy Batsman until the 18th over when Julian Sinclair was picked off for a 19-run over and then with 10 balls to spare, Butler delivered the coup de gras.
The Cavaliers had been invited to bat first and were soon in unfamiliar territory, losing both openers with the score in single figures. Bharat and Kwesi Sinclair then rebuilt the innings with 54 and 23 respectively, but the Vincy Bowlers were also in austere mood.
When Bharat’s vigil ended by skying Pope's delivery to the back pedaling Keelan Robin, all hopes of a respectable score hinged on Shane Sinclair (18), Julian Sinclair (16) and Christnand Dhanpaul (17). Despite some lusty blows from the trio, the Cavaliers were probably 20 odd runs short of where they wanted to be.
Turby Xavier led the way with 4 -23 and M. Pope finished with 3 -20 as the Cavaliers were all out off the last ball of the innings for a below par 165.
The Vincy reply was a solid affair with Kenrick Leslie (28) and Robin (20) taking few chances as they set a platform. However, Austin McDowall seemed preoccupied with defending his wicket, which is unusual for perhaps the most talented of the territory's batsmen and when he fell 27, bowled by Sinclair (J) playing across the line of a straight delivery, the Vincy were behind the asking rate and needing some inspiration.
Then came Butler and the complexion of the game changed immediately. His first two shots crashed into and over the fence, his third, not surprisingly a single of the last ball, a single and then 3 more boundaries to settle the Vincy nerves and set the cow bells ringing. There was one more moment of drama as he was caught off a no ball, but it was a match winning innings to savour.
Meanwhile, Richard Fredericks of Vikings was named the Leading Wicket Taker and Teddy Nankishore (Cavaliers) the Leading Run Scorer.
The award ceremony was attended by the minister responsible for sport, the Honourable Myron V. Walwyn and representatives of the sponsors Digicel and Nagico as well as members of the BVI Cricket Association (BVICA).
