KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent & The Grenadines – Residents of St Vincent and the Grenadines have been placed on high alert and warned to stay away from La Soufriere, after authorities detected an increase in seismic activity at the volcano over the weekend.

The Local National Emergency Management Organization and the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC) says they are currently monitoring the activity.

"We are currently monitoring the situation in collaboration with local authorities. The public is advised to not visit the volcano until a further update is provided,” UWI-SRC tweeted on Tuesday, December 30, 2020.

Meanwhile, on late Tuesday, Officials reported tremors, strong gas emissions and the formation of a new volcanic dome and changes to its crater lake at the site.

La Soufriere, located near the northern tip of the main island of St Vincent, last erupted in 1979, and a previous eruption in 1902 killed some 1,600 people.

Be on alert to evacuate if needed – SVG Gov’t

The government warned those living near the volcano to prepare to evacuate if needed, declaring an orange alert, which means eruptions could occur with less than 24 hours’ notice.

Volcanoes that have been quiet for decades including Grenada’s called Kick ‘Em Jenny have been rumbling to life in the eastern Caribbean.

The new activities have been prompting officials to issue alerts in Martinique a well as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as scientists rush in to study activity they say have not been observed in years.

You people are heartless. See what's your biggest concern. My gosh a disaster that could devastate lives and properties and instead of sympathizing and worried of the havoc that could be wreak this what you guys worried about. After hurricanes Irma and Maria where we needed assistance from our Caribbean brothers and sisters this your input into this serious concern. Wow smh at the insensitivity of our people.

Don't give them the honor of responding. The person who makes these blogs do not really understand that there is a power bigger than him/her. He better be careful that something don't happen to him that make him and people who think like him end up on the doorstep of another country or island they never dreamt in their wildest dream they will end up. Karma is a bigger b***h than they can imagine, but they going say is somebody put it on them. This person also does not represent me nor alot of other decent BVI citizens. Hope God have mercy on his or her soul

It is ok my people. Today for us, tomorrow for them. This us not only a people thing it is also the mindset of successive administrations. As night catches day tortola will have its day. Let us see where they run to. They already giving births to their children in st Thomas. They even don't trust their own health care system unless they want to give birth to their children in another man's land. Do so don't like so. Time will tell. Destruction will eventually come, remember sodom and gomorrow.

So sorry they have to experience such a disaster in these already hard times, however, there are so many other islands they can go to that is close by such as Dominica' St.Kitts, Antigua, St. Martin, and St. Thomas, etc, so what is so special about Tortola? , hmm these people, do not have any behavior, everything for them is to chop up people. Let them go else where.
