Vincent O’Neal leaving BVI Ports Authority?

ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI – An advertisement sparked it all, and now eyebrows are being raised as to why and if the current Managing Director of the BVI Ports Authority, Vincent O’Neal is leaving the post, which he has held since 2006.

However, Virgin Islands News Online was reliably informed that his contract comes to an end in July 2012, and he can reapply for the job.

The advertisement has been placed in all of the Territory’s newspapers stating that the Ports Authority is seeking a qualified and highly motivated individual to fill the position of Managing Director.

Applicants must have a first degree in Management or Port Management and or a Post graduate qualification in Management, Port, Logistics, or Operations Management. The deadline for applicants is July 17, 2012.

As the Managing Director, O'Neal is charged with the direction of the authority, managing ports, marketing and promotion of services, staffing and personnel operations, and advising the board on planning, policy and operation matters.

He was appointed Managing Director on August 1, 2006 for a two-year period. He has held a number of supervisory positions in the private and public sectors in the Virgin Islands and the United States for about two decades.
O’Neal also served as Chief Immigration Officer from 1997 through 2004.

Efforts to contact O’Neal were fruitless up to publication time.

He is an employee and his contract is up. The government has a right to either re-new it or employ another person. When one is in certain positions, they must be careful how they treat others and talk to nd about others.

LMAO!! How can he re-apply? Is he qualified according to these new requirements? Does Vincent hold a degree in Port Management? Politics is what killing this country and yes I know, is NDP who appointed him in 2006 but that's not the point. What he know about Ports? And yes, you all will jump on Claude and I will say the same, he knows nothing about Ports either.

Ya'll with these uncertain POLITICAL jobs! To make it worst, these jobs that ya'll fighting for do not even pay well. Strupes! let me stay in the private sector and earn a decent salary (with a more secured job) until I can open my own business.

LOL! That makes two of us! They fighting and bickering for these positions paying $50k per year with qualifications lol. I'll stay in the private sector where you get perks and more importantly, you are compensated based on ability and productivity and not political leanings. lol If people are so confident in themselves and ability to get the job done, I don't see why they always running down these Govt jobs. I know the pension sweet in the end but...not worth it to me!

I'm just being devils advocate here. lol. Follow the link to Liverpool Johns Moores University. http://www.ljmu.ac.uk/courses/postgraduate/course.asp?CourseID=309. They off a Port Management MSc-On completion of the course you will have a rounded view of the management of ports and port terminals as well as the wider logistics industry. In addition you will be able to move into port management worldwide, as the programme covers container and bulk port operations at postgraduate level, as well as the personnel issues ensuing from the management of port labour.

A contract is mutual agreement between two parties. In this instance, it appears as if both parties met the term and condition of the contract. The unknown is if there were option in contract for follow services if both sides agree. If there were options and the government decided not to execute, that speaks volume. This is the contract side of things. But lurking below the surface is politics. We can pretend that politics is not a big factor in BVI decision making. If you believe that I got thousands of acres of flat, arable land on Round Rock to sell you. If I were V. Victor O'neal I would not waste my precious time and paper to apply for postion, for if government wanted him it could have negotiated a contract extension. Then again perhaps Mr. O'Neal may want to move on to pursue some personal and professional. opportunities. July 17th is the deadline for apps.. lets see what shake out. Mr. Creque needs a turn at the wheel. He is a loyal. deputywho lost out to a myriad of directors: Penn, George, O

"Well Sah", that answer is quite simple. Why, you would just attend a Coast Guard Academy. I'm sure they're plenty of schools in the Kingdom and in America. Search online, especially in the areas of America that are closest to water-i.e. Maine, Florida, Massachussetts-why, all the states on the Northeast. Good Luck!

Managers and members of staff wish to disassociate with this statement as it does not represent or reflect the views of the majority of us.

So what is your view? And you are basing your view on the director violating or abusing policies, abusing and treating employes, behaving and acting unprofessionaly, employing resources ineffectively, failing to achieve goals and objectives or exercising poor leadership? Or you are basing your view on a difference of opinion or organizational preference? There are no universal rules in management. There are no right or wrong way but preferences. Managers can and often times take different routes to achieve the same objectives. Team members will not always see eye-to-eye with managers. But at the end of the day if the manager is not violating policy or acting unsafely or acting behaving immorally, then he/she. should be able to depend team members for loyalty and support in pursuing organizational goals and objectives.
