ROAD TOWN, Tortola, VI — A hybrid presentation to members of the Lions Club of Tortola, focusing on the early warning signs of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia, took centre stage on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, as the Virgin Islands Alzheimer's Association (VIAA) continued its community awareness campaign.

During the session, Lions Club members received valuable information on recognising potential changes in memory, thinking, behaviour, and daily functioning. The presentation emphasised the importance of early recognition, evaluation, and support for individuals and their families.

The gathering also provided an opportunity to reflect on the longstanding relationship between the Lions Club and the VIAA. Members took time to reminisce about the Lions Club's involvement with the Association from its inception, including through the leadership and service of the late Carvin Malone. That history was remembered as an important part of VIAA's development and its continuing commitment to bringing Alzheimer's awareness, education, and support to communities throughout the Virgin Islands.

"Our relationship with the Lions Club of Tortola is part of the story of who we are as an organisation," said VIAA President Ms Edna S. Williams. "As we look back on the support and leadership that helped us from our earliest days, including the contributions of the late Carvin Malone, we are reminded that this work has always been about community. Today, we continue that legacy by educating our community about the early warning signs of Alzheimer's, encouraging early action, and making sure families know they are not alone."

September observed as World Alzheimer's Month

As the Association prepares for World Alzheimer's Month in September, the VIAA is encouraging the community to learn more about Alzheimer's disease and related dementias and to recognise the importance of knowing the early warning signs.

This year's theme, "The Earlier You Know, the More You Can Do," underscores the importance of recognising changes early, seeking information and support, and taking steps that can help individuals and families navigate a diagnosis.

Throughout September, the VIAA will host a number of activities and initiatives to observe World Alzheimer's Month, raise awareness, provide education, and encourage community dialogue around Alzheimer's and dementia.

“September gives us an important opportunity to bring the conversation about Alzheimer’s and dementia to an even wider audience,” said Ms Williams. “The message behind this year’s theme, ‘The Earlier You Know, the More You Can Do,’ is powerful because knowledge gives families an opportunity to make informed decisions, seek support, and plan for the future. We encourage everyone to join us throughout the month and become part of this important conversation.”
