CARTAGENA, Colombia - The Virgin Islands (VI) and the Dominican Republic (DR) have reaffirmed the economic importance of the Greater Caribbean as the region seeks to boost its economic dynamism and resilience.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) and the Dominican Republic's Vice Minister for Cooperation, Hon Hugo Rivera, discussed the advantages of Caribbean countries doing more trade with each other and the need for enhanced connectivity between economies to facilitate the process when they met in the margins of the 10th Summit of the Heads of Government and/or State in Cartagena, Colombia in May.

According to a press release from the Office of the Premier, the two statesmen highlighted the need for closer cooperation on air and sea transport to optimise the economic potential and productivity of the region.

In terms of bilateral economic relations, they discussed their economies’ tourism sectors and the potential for cooperation that could mutually benefit both sides.

They agreed, according to the press release, that their respective teams would have further discussions on sectors of cooperation ahead of a BVI trade mission in the weeks ahead.

'Untapped potential'

Speaking on the bilateral meeting, Premier Wheatley said: “The British Virgin Islands, as a fellow member of the Association of Caribbean States family, shares the view of the Dominican Republic and Member States of the regional organisation that the Greater Caribbean has untapped economic potential that can be unlocked through closer regional cooperation.

"At the bilateral level, the BVI and DR continue to explore the sectors where we can work together for mutual economic benefit. In addition to the sectors already identified in previous BVI-DR exchanges, tourism and sea and air transport are important sectors where cooperation could add tremendous value. The BVI will remain engaged with the DR as arrangements are made for a trade mission in the very near future”.

It was in February 2025 that Premier Wheatley stated that the Dominican Republic is one of the largest recipients of foreign direct investment in the Western Hemisphere and one of the VI’s neighbours.

“They have a lot of agriculture, and they produce a lot of products. I’m going to be taking a trade mission to the Dominican Republic to see how we can secure a trade relationship that can help us to lower the price of goods in the Virgin Islands,” he explained.

A big PhD attached to his name and he can't think, there running about like headless chicken talking about other country going help the BVI, help themselves to what ever benifit there is since there is no reciprocity because the BVI too small and don't manufacture or grow anything.
If the government could a really develop love for their own black people, all those cays of islands out in the water should be given to the people decided up into boutique hotel finance by funds from the notorious offshore banking companies tax at a concessionary rate to indigenous BVI people. Stop selling the off shore cays to white rich people like Bronson though he is a good guy, get aluminum trawler fishing boats out of Alaska which is in for the long haul and lease it to BVI people and export fish, the key thing is you got to give the people the land and resources, and that a road on the way to independence.

    Human and drug trafficking...
Prostitution, illegal aliens, and the bilingual aspect which is convenient for the South American involvement..The BVI is not even attempting to hide its sinister activities in the Caribbean Seas and beyond

I don’t think DR should engage any sort of business with the BVI until they start to treat their people better.. staring by removing the VISA and allow them to come in without VISA.. the BVI needs to come off that slavery mentality.. they don’t like it but they treat the expats like slaves.
