VI will assert rights that colonialism 'must be a thing of the past' - Dr the Hon Wheatley

-as guaranteed by UN Special Committee on Decolonisation
Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has hinted that regardless of what comes out of the CoI Report and recommendations, the Virgin Islands (VI) will still be asserting its rights and position that colonialism must end. BAUGHERS BAY, Tortola, VI – Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, Culture, Youth Affairs, Fisheries and Agriculture, Dr the Hon Natalio D. Wheatley (R7) has hinted that regardless of what comes out of the CoI Report and recommendations, the Virgin Islands (VI) will still be asserting its United Nations-backed rights that colonialism must be a thing of the past.

Dr the Hon Wheatley was at the time speaking during the Tuesday, April 5, 2022, edition of VIP Let’s Talk with Minister for Transportation, Works and Utilities Hon Kye M. Rymer (R5) and Minister for Natural Resources, Labour and Immigration Hon Vincent O. Wheatley (R9), when he was questioned on the VI’s position coming out of the CoI Report that is now with the Governor.

Ending Colonialism

Dr Wheatley said through attending the UN Special Committee meetings on Decolonisation (C-24), it has been guaranteed that colonialism must be a thing of the past for countries like VI, a British Overseas Territory (OT).

“We are asserting our right that have been guaranteed, inalienable rights which has been acknowledged by the United Kingdom and all the other members of the United Nations, who have signed on to the United Nations Charters,” he said.

“Of course, we have a Commission of Inquiry that was commissioned by the Governor and backed by the UN, but it does not mean that we can have our rights taken away from us,” he said.

In essence, Dr the Hon Wheatley said that although the UN has backed the UK-sponsored CoI, the same UN still has an obligation to ensure that the era of colonialism must be a 'thing of the past' and those rights must not be violated.

CoI Report now with Governor

Meanwhile, Governor of the Virgin Islands, John J. Rankin, CMG, who received the report on April 5, 2022, from the CoI Commissioner, said until the report is made public after consultations with the Government, he knows that there will be speculation and some people may try to discredit or second-guess the CoI Report and recommendations.

Hon Wheatley, during the VIP Radio show, asserted, “The UN has said, and the world has said, that colonialism must be a thing of the past.”

Governor Rankin has since indicated that while the Report is being reviewed, no 'substantive statements' will be made on it until after Easter.

The majority of the white population throughout the world have a culture of colonial racism. They believe that they rule the world! It's an evil that they pass on throughout their lineage... and it's time for that 'evil culture' to come to an end!

The UK really does nothing to effect our day to day, the COI was called to check on our government, which to be honest I believe was needed. I like having the UK having our back, and stop this rampant corruptness. I don't trust either VIP or NDP, they both as bad as each other.
It was OUR government that spent 7mil on a airline that did not fly, 1mil on a simple school wall, 140mil on a cruise dock which was budget for 70. hospital that took 12yrs to build and so over budget, our roads that look like hell, sewage pumping out everywhere etc etc etc They take our money and get upset when someone question it.
UK got us support after IRMA, got us vax for those that want BEFORE any other Caribbean nation...
We all need to grow up and see who is really taking from us and who is supporting us.

Exactly! Well said. Unfortunately a lot of people only see it as black vs white but they couldn’t be more blind to the bigger picture.

It's funny that they really pushing this narrative that it's the UK that's the big bad wolf out for the VI. When you look at all the crap we go through and all the money wasted,(or stolen who knows) it's our own people that's there taking advantage of us and you don't hear a peep. But now when they get questioned by people above, all of a sudden the UK bad, they wa take over, they ain't want us to strive etc etc. I don't understand if the politicians really belief what they saying or they just believe we are idiots so they can just say what they want to gather attention. Anywyays, since we the people don't do anything other than make a lil noise here and there, I can see them continuing to follow the status quo.

Can you please focus on dealing with matters that are within your ambit and responsibility. The UK and a COI are not to blame for the sad state of the infrastructure in the BVI. The VIP have been in 'power' now for over three years and still we have no high school meaning an entire intake of high school children will never have experienced full time education in a facility which enables them to learn.

We blacks have put our selves in slavery and will continue to do so for a fist full of money. Hate to get blunt but I don’t see the Whites smuggling black illegals out of the Country. Isin’t that slavery towards another black?

Without our Independence and under the U.K., there will always be their COI. Even with our Independence, we will need to monitor how the Government is handling our finances, but without the U.K. controlling us.

If y'all start to teach in the schools black people real history instead of thiefing Columbus history, that would be a start to black people redemption. Instead of holding on to the white man religion which is proven fake. Teach the youths to be accountable for their decisions instead of casting the blame on a made up devil. Only then we shall see great change in the black men.

I thank God God that I didn't voted for Hon. Dr. Natalio Sajande Wheatley, D7 Rep. He sees things hazily, and hastily. He focus deeply on the Independence issue, but disregards other main reason why the CoI came here in the first place.
He is, like others VIP Cabinet leaders that are pretending that the CoI main focus is to keep us under their Colonial grip more so rather than came to to help ease the burden of political mismanagement of our finance, especially so over the past twenty years.
True, Independence is our moral rights, but also do we the people of the BVI, their employers have the right to know how our finances are being use by our current politicians. The main is not UK's suppression, but political suppression being in practicing mode in the BVI .

The UK is like a parent or big brother to the BVI. The UK would be happy to see the BVI leave the family home and set up on its own. However, until the BVI is capable of looking after itself, the UK must continue to be the guardian a troubled child needs.

Sirrrr, I would very much have appreciated it if you were more focused on letting the people of the territory know what your plans were for the school system, after all you are Minister of Education, correct? This is my opinion, you are slowly walking your own way out of office. Do you really think you are going to be elected back in office? My opinion, if you had put your foot to the pavement and focus on the schools you would have been good. You took on to many Portfolios, I think each Minister should only be assigned one Portfolio.

Dude stop focusing on independence and focus on education. I don't ever hear him talk anything that needs to be done or what he's going to do to better the education system.

When have the UK looked out for VI's interest? The UN said that they are obligated to help us reach self-determination status. When have they done that? Constitutional review after Constitutional they've been reluctant to give us any devolve power the very powers we need to test the self-determinant waters. Too many of us have been duped by the false security we think they represent. Remember that some enslaved people refuse to leave the plantation after they had the ability to do so. The UK's interest in these Virgin Island has always been their interest in these island and nothing have changed. When your freedom has been taken from you and you become so accustom and reliant on your jailer that when the opportunity arises and you fail or no longer want to seize that opportunity the fire for self-determination has burnt out; you have resorted back to a chattel and commodity status. You have been re enslaved except this time by choice.
