SPANISH TOWN, Virgin Gorda, VI - The Virgin Islands has welcomed the inaugural call of the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection’s Evrima to Virgin Gorda on Friday, December 16, 2022, where the luxury vessel spent the day in Virgin Gorda, before moving on to Jost Van Dyke to continue its call to the Territory.

The Evrima is currently on a seven-night cruise from Phillipsburg, St. Maarten to San Juan, Puerto Rico with 285 passengers and 212 crew members onboard and after the vessel departs the Virgin Islands, she will complete her itinerary and conclude the cruise in Puerto Rico.

A release on the call has detailed that Evrima is the Ritz-Carlton’s first venture into the cruise industry which will be followed by two others, the Ilma in 2024 and the Luminara in 2025. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has mentioned that the company is committed to sustainable practices and implies that the superyachts will be designed with advanced environmental features and technologies to minimize ecological impact.

The BVIPA said the welcoming of the ship to the VI has highlighted the Territory’s renewed focus on the cruise industry, “Part of the cruise growth strategy involves focusing on smaller luxury lines that will spend multiple days in the Virgin Islands. This is important as the Cruise Lines Industry Association (CLIA) State of the Industry 2022 report indicates that 6 in 10 people who have taken a cruise say that they have returned to a destination that they first visited via cruise ship,” the release noted.

Vessel is the epitome of maritime excellence - Hon Flax-Charles

During the welcoming ceremony, a plaque was presented on behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands to the captain of the Evrima, Captain Duncan Holroyd commemorating the vessel’s inaugural call to the Territory.

Present at the plaque exchange ceremony were the Acting Governor Mr. David D. Archer Jr., Premier and Minister of Finance, Dr. the Honourable Natalio D. Wheatley (R7), Deputy Premier and Minister for Communications and Works, Honourable Kye M. Rymer (R5), the Junior Minister for Trade and Economic Development, Director of the BVI Tourist Board, Mr. Clive McCoy, Marketing Director for the BVI Ports Authority, Mrs. Natasha Chalwell, and port agents from the Romasco Group, Ms. Patricia Romney along with Ms. Sabrina Koss.

This is awesome news indeed. As of late Virgin Gorda has been front and center in the travel trade. If that is the case then the BVI is also front and center. Wish we could milk this for all its worth to showcase the destination with strategic and aggressive marketing initiatives. Unfortunately all the key leaders heading our tourism sector are all rookies in their posts; Premier, Jr. Minister, Chairwoman, and DOT. So wish we had some of those heavy hitters from the past. Keeping the faith nonetheless! ????????

This is all well and good but the crew and passengers of this boat do not really spend any money ashore as they have everything on board. Rather they create congestion at The Baths creating a major inconvenience for the people who really spend the big bucks in the BVI....the yacht charter people...

The publicity that is generated as a result is priceless.
More long-nd short term visitors could be the result

We need to seriously clean up the BVI if we want more tourists to return to our shores, not just VG. Tortola has the most broken-down dangerous infrastructure, trashy streets, yucky sewer stench, junk yards on so many private properties with old nasty cars, garbage, and boats like Sea Cows Bay, Long Trench, Fat Hogs Bay, Greenland, and Long Look. Dirty nasty goats and cows wander freely, and people actually eat dirty these bug-infested animals. Tortola is the capital of the BVI, yet we are the biggest eyesore. We should be ashamed of the way we are living here, and the government refuses to make landowners clean up their mess which can be seen on the open roads as we drive by, and keep their animals penned. The place is just a FILTHY cesspool!
